Is duran slightly overrated as an ATG?

He lost to ATG's larger than him. He beat Bucanan in the early 70's and fought Hearns, Hagler and Loenard in the mid to late 80's. Now take that into considersion and recaculate.

 

Lol a natural light weight putting up a fight against bigger middle weights and knocking out Barkley says a lot.. The SRL win is one of the greatest wins ever

 

Imagine Lomachenko going up to WW and beating Errol Spence after defending his LW crown at least 10 times(Beating Mikey and all other top LWsin process) and going to JMW and defeating Mungia then losing a razor thin decision to GGG but beating BJ Saunders or Danny Jacobs by KO for a title a yr later..

 

And doing it all that whilst you are past your prime. Though I guess the Hopkins comparison factors that in.

 

He’s a top 10 ATG.

 

Some of those guys were the greatest fighters ever or close to it for their weight classes. Can you see Hagler beating Spinks at LHW, hell no.

 

Looking at it from an objective standpoint, I think there are a plethora of fighters who came after the 80's who would've been competitive and possibly had beaten Duran. Manny vs Duran is 50/50, Floyd vs Duran at 130 or 135 is 51/49 favouring Duran but I could see Floyd pulling off the upset, I would favor fighters like Oscar, Thurman, Tito, Vernon, Spence, and Pernelle the edge to beat Duran tbh. Duran was great but there are fighters out there who would've probably had beaten him.

 

You named a lot of good fighters. However, I think you’re over estimating most of them. Here’s my take:

Duran UD Floyd...Floyd would trouble him though.

Duran KO Pac...too many exploitable holes in Pac’s Defense.

Duran UD Oscar...looks a lot like DLH vs Trinidad, except Oscar doesn’t befuddle Duran with his jab at any point in the fight.

Duran T/KO Thurman. Remember, a past his prime, lighter hitting Collazo put Keith “Once Upon A Time” Thurman on skates with a body blow.

Duran UD Tito...As long as he stays away from and/or defends against Tito’s left hook, he should be fine.

Duran UD Forrest

Duran T/KO Spence. This fight resembles Duran vs Barkley. Unfortunately for Spence, he is a lot smaller than Barkley. As a result of he does not see the final belt.

Duran SD Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea manages to befuddle Duran. Unfortunately, he loses a controversial decision anyway.

These fights assume a motivated Duran. This Duran shows up focused and in tip-top shape.

How did I make excuses or reach? The only thing I said is that my opinion assumes we’re talking about a motivated, well conditioned Duran. Especially since he did lose to Kirkland Laing.

Plus, do you think my opinion of Duran vs Sweet Pea is biased? I think Pernell beats him but gets shafted by the judges, like he did against Ramirez, Chavez, and DLH.

So how do the fighters you named beat him? I’m especially interested to hear about PAC, Thurman, and Spence.

He was 50 Years old when he had his last Fight and went the Distance with Hector Comacho...Like a lot of Great Fighters He fought to long...definitely in my Top 10 ATGs....
