Couldn't disagree more with this analysis. Every era has its elite fighters. Today is no exception. Lomachenko is as gifted a fighter as you will find in any era. Crawford and Spence have this potential. Golovkin is one of the best MW the division has seen, in any era. So funny how as people age they view the world today as inferior in many areas, music, sports, politics, etc. to what they grew up in. The best is the best, in any given era.
I concur but I think the kids today throw around the ATG BS way too soon. Noobs be making threads like greatest offense ever in boxing after a guy crushes a can. The hyperbole after every fight is real so I can understand when some try to objectify fighters to an extent.
I agree. It is that way with everything, not just boxing. Everyone is navel-gazing. And to be frank, what we are doing right now is a bit of navel-gazing. A generation ago before the internet you would have chatted with a few buddies about results of a fight. Today guys spend hours and hours going over the most minute details about each and every fight and fighter. I try not to do that, but it is fun to be able to get perspectives from a few who understand the game.
"Am I wearing rose tinted glasses? No, it is everyone else that is wrong!" Always made a moment of self realization there, don't hurt yourself.
The P4P/Hype kids are just the flip side to the entitled, rose tinted glasses wearing fans that constantly complain about the state of the sport. They're both parts of the same **** sandwhich. **** em' both, I'm here to enjoy the sport, not tear it down.
As I stated before, the term ATG gets bestoed on boxers far too much these days. In my opinion there are 3 ways to be come a great fighter. 1) who you beat 2) what you accomplish 3) a bit of 1 and 2. The ol eye test only applies to present P4P not ATG status. By these standards many fighters fall short of being an ATG. In the current batch of fighters, Loma is the only one that is on the right path to ATG status.
Maybe he just believes that, he says he's been watching boxing for over 40 years so he's entitled to that opinion, I doubt too many people posting here have even been alive 40 years.
Opinions are like assholes. Just because he's had one for 40 years doesn't mean I want to hear about his.
benitez is a great fighter so if spence is on the same level hes gonna be fine you know benitez schooled duran right.
The talent is there or he wouldn't be where he is today. He's not flashy but he can be. If you watched the Peterson fight then you witnessed some of that. His ring IQ is excellent and he gets better as the fight progresses. I think that he will make it to the HOF.
Dude, he doesn't even have the resume of Thurman at the moment. Nobody is making outrageous claims about him. He does seem like he is a beast capable of winning matchups that might elevate him into a highly notable fighter in his era. But that is just pure speculation and something that people get excited about seeing unfold one way or the other. I will agree that the era is weak, especially at the current moment where such a large percentage of the top fighters seem less quantitatively proven and great than normal. But I think the quality is there and suspect some of these guys to be legit standouts within a couple years. We will see.
I'm kinda with Slender on this one. I don't think anyone active has proved themselves to be worthy of ATG status yet...And, yeah, that includes TC and Loma. But since their respective careers have yet to be completed, I'm willing to wait to see if that might change, and to see who comes closest to achieving all time greatness if it doesn't.
