Standard of perfection? Janitor, Dempsey had a 7 year period as champion where he failed to meet the number 1 and number 2 contenders for the title. How exactly are we holding Dempsey to some absurd standard?

If Dempsey had defended his title just twice and clearly beaten Wills and Greb...his reign would look a whole lot better than it actually was

    I never argued with that.

Now that I have to seriously question.

Most ATG resumes don't actually turn on beating the best contender of the era.

They turn on seizing the #1 spot, consistent form against the top ten.

Let's just look at recent events:

The two best heavyweights in the world did not face off, at any point between 2003 and 2013.

When we had a dominant champion we were not saying "by god he must fight his #1 contender", we were looking for somebody who would pose an interesting head to head challenge.

We have taken a lot on the chin over the last 20 years, that Dempsey gets tarred and feathered for.

"scientific polling" lmao you're too funny.

The poll had something like 134,000 votes.

There is a valid point here.

The contender that the public wan't the champion to fight, is not necessarily the #1 rated contender.

It is sometimes the person who people thing will give the champion a good fight.

When Lennox Lewis was defending against men like Grant, Tua, and Tyson, people were not angrily demanding that he fight the more qualified Ruiz and Byrd.

Again, look at it through the lens of recent history.

    Being 39 years old...

Fight with Gardener. Everyone else he fought had losing records or no records which is pitiful for a man of Fitz's caliber.

Sharkey had nothing to do with it you dolt. I asked if Fitz was prime for Jeffries and you replied with a wall of text instead of saying no. I don't care if past prime Robinson beat Bobo Olson. Past prime Fitz LOST to James J. Jeffries.

Yeah that's two years moron. Do you acknowledge that it's impossible to be beaten if you aren't fighting? Yes or No?

You took part of my quote out of context. You've waved the white flag. Enough energy has been wasted on your irrational opinions and I already told you to **** off.

Once again harping on brothers never fighting each other in the ring, in a sport where some athletes get killed...

Except Wills was not only the number 1 contender, but the guy everyone in the world thought would pose the most interesting head to head challenge.

Dempsey knocking out Wills in 1920 and Greb in 1921 then laying off for three years before losing to Tunney......

Far more impressive title reign than

1920 Brennan- a loser of title eliminator
    1920 miske- a dying man
    1921 Carpentier
1923 gibbons- loser of a title eliminator
1923 Firpo- South American hype job

Name me good reliable sources who didn’t have Wills as THE contender the public wanted to see Dempsey fight.
