Road to WBC mandatory runs through him. Dillian Whyte felt discretion was the better part of valor, others probably will too. Will be interesting to see who takes him up on it. Maybe Prince Martin?
I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch with Wilder. - Assuming Hearn finds a way to derail the AJ fight, and that's the safest bet in boxing.
If I'm Ortiz, id resign with Hearn and chase some big fights/paydays to finish off his career. Joshua vs Povetkin, Whyte vs Parker, Chisora vs Takam, Allen vs Yoka... it seems like all the Matchroom fighters are fighting regularly against tough opposition and making good coin, whilsHaymon'sns fighters are all sitting on the bench hoping Hearn gives them some money. If the Whyte snub isn't a big enough sign that matchroom fighters have said on our terms or hit the road, then I'm guessing Ortiz vs Stiverne for another under the table payday.
He's old, he was out of shape vs. Wilder. I don't think he's going to be any force to be reckoned with to be frank. Watch him on Youtube: Nice big house, wife, kids, eating popcorn in front of the TV with his obese family. He didn't strike me as an ambitioned man who would temporarily sacrifice his family life in order to get himself into exceptional shape.
Yeah he's never come across as truly dedicated or ambitious. He wasted most of his prime, until the Jennings fight he literally was a nobody in the division and at that point he'd been a pro for almost 6 years. People crap of Wilder for his slow development but 6 years into his pro career he was fighting for a title, while Ortiz was still beating a shot Thompson. Then when he did get a chance of a mandatory shot by beating Ustinov, he backed out not once but twice. You'd think he didn't want a title shot or something. Then when he was eventually mandatory for the biggest cash cow in the division since Tyson he picks to fight Wilder a guy seen by the majority at the time as a weaker paper champion. Not exactly the behaviour of a hungry and ambitious fighter. People question a lot of Cuban fighters desire when they turn pro and Ortiz seems to fit that mould. Ortiz's options are limited. He's doing a good job of being Wilder's body guard but that doesn't actually pay, maybe Haymon will move him into a mandatory spot for the WBC belt as a back up plan should Wilder lose to Joshua. But either way Ortiz's time at the top is limited, he's not a young man but if he shows any further signs of decline then he might get matched up with someone who wants to pad their record with a decent name.
Everybody except Wilder is afraid of him. So, more than likely, he'll languish just outside of contender status making less money than he deserves until he fades away. Sad.
As Vykus pointed out he should of stuck with Hearn. Instead of just fighting on a fight by fight basis with Hearn he should of signed with him and if he had, he wouldn't of gotten a shot yet as Povetkin is still waiting for his mandatory shot but he would of been kept active, maybe even fighting Whyte now instead of Parker and likely made more money in the long term than the $500K he made vs Wilder and had he finally got mandatory in 2019 vs Joshua he'd be laughing all the way to the bank with a multi million dollar payday.
Nice paragraph, but that doesn't make Whyte, AJ, Parker, Povetkin, Miller, etc. any less chicken. Bok bok.
ortiz had his shot/gave it a go / but was not in great shape and lost. i think back to lennox lewis when he lost to mccall he had to fight lionel butler who was on a hot ko streak and was ranked 1 for the wbc eliminator lewis duly won and was now ranked 1 don king who controlled heavies at the time bypassed lewis with the wbc and got tyson a shot instead v bruno lewis then had to have a stay busy fight with an australian i think it was whose name i forget 3 uppercuts finished it justin fortune just remembered. then he had to fight tommy morrison in morrisons backyard in what was seen at the time as a 50/50 fight lewis won then he had to fight ray mercer in mercers backyard in what proved to be a very tough fight finally he got a title shot after that in a rematch with mccall when tyson vacated. and lewis had way more marketabilty and foillowing than ortiz and found it a long hard slog to get another title shot at 39 / with no marketabilkty/following/fanbase/ money behind him ortiz is well and truly in the who needs him club. ortiz has to hope joshua loses soon and the belts become splintered otherwise he will just have a couple of low key fights and then fade from the scene
Yes, everyone's chicken of those who rarely fight, and when they do, they never fight each other and only fight journeymen... Wilder, Brezeale, Jennings, Ruiz Jr, Miller, Kownacki, Martin... not a single one of the top US heavies have had a single fight between them, yet people scratch their heads wondering why the US heavyweight scene is going down the toilet and I get called an 'AJfan' or a 'Hearnfanboy' for calling a bunch of ducks..ducks. Meanwhile across the pond at the centre of the world heavyweight scene, the fights are on constantly and the fighters are making millions. Ortiz should sign a 3 fight deal with Matchroom. It's in his interests. It took 3 years to finally get Wilder in the ring, god knows how long it will take him to get another fight. He'll make a cool couple million fighting good fighters in the UK before he retires.
Lol, love how people make out Ortiz is some boogie man of the division, based off of KOing Jennings a guy so fearsome a 4 fight novice like Joyce is begging to fight him now. And even if Ortiz was as good as the Jennings wins suggested, that Ortiz is gone, he's an old man on medication for blood pressure. Made to look bad by Scott and Allen. He looked so bad then than even with a failed drug test Wilder wanted the fight, why didn't Wilder make the same decision when this happened with Povetkin I wonder, lmao. Ortiz did some ducking of his own too when he twice ducked out of the Ustinov fight. Maybe he didn't fear Ustinov but maybe he feared having to actually be the mandatory and fight Fury. Also why did he not want to remain the WBA mandatory for Joshua's belts, why did he choose to fight for less against Wilder rather than wait and make 10 times as much being a mandatory for Joshua. Maybe Wilder seemed like an easier fight or if you look at it the other way, Joshua seemed a little too daunting a task, bok, bok. See how easy it is to falsely create a narrative that a fighter is being ducked. Fact is Ortiz is scaring nobody at the moment. He's suffering from the Pulevitis. That were a proposed opponent see the paycheck they will get for fighting someone and goes and finds an opponent that will pay them more than what amounts to minimum wage in boxing terms lol.
