I am normally the first to say, "show me what he did against ranked contenders", as in actual wins!

Lyle is perhaps the exception, that proves the rule, along with Ray Mercer.

I hope that speech inspires him, after Louis knocks him out!

    "Show me a ranked contender."

    -->

    1) Eras among the century are highly unhomogeneous. As long as you won´t stay in fantasy land of course.

    2) Ranked contenders differ hightly among their abilites (of course they do). Paring two fighters, what does it matter naming a "ranked" contender with the exact the opposite fighting type? It´s nonsense, everbody with a half brain could get this. The question is did a fighter deal with something comparable.

Lyle startet too late and didn´t build up a big resume, but he showed that he had some heavy hands. They key for Louis is to just not get hit big some of these bombs. Considering Louis defense was mostly his offense, the task won´t be easy.
Most of the smaller men in Louis era just couldn´t afford beeing as dangerous as Lyle was. I´m tired of talking about HW power*chin baseline beeing different among eras...*snore*

Shavers was at the bottom of the top 10 then Lyle beat him. Larry Middleton was around #6, depending on whose ratings you use, when Lyle got him at the end of 1972. So that's two. All of Lyle's other victories against top 10 opposition were by decision.

    Yep, that's it.

Middleton if he wasn't eliminated by Quarry was ranked #10.

Shavers was eliminated by a journeyman named Bob Stallings (21-24 (twenty-one and twenty-four)) but might have clawed his way back by the time Lyle fought him.

    That's it.

Joe Louis sparred guys like that. Sparred them. And worked on his weaknesses.

KO1 if he was in a bad mood.

This notion that Louis era had smaller men is just inaccurate. There were plenty of Lyle sized or bigger guys in the top 10 Buddy Baer, Primo Carnera, Max Baer, Ernie Schaaf, Lee Q Murray etc. Lyles power couldnt put away little guys like Quarry or Ellis. The biggest top guys in the 30s were actually bigger than those in the 70s

Holmes and many many others have been stunned/dropped and by average opponents. I think Louis cops a bit of a raw deal comparative to others.

Nearly/almost/just about isn't quite there for me.

I don’t. I see Louiscas far too fast and taking him out in three or four rounds.

I like Lyle. Great competitor. Generally, an offensive threat to almost all Heavyweights, no matter the era.

I don't like him to beat Louis, though. He's probably too easy for a Boxer of Louis' caliber to beat to the punch and counter with heavy returns.

Sure, Louis might get tagged, but I doubt he's deterred too much on his way to knocking Lyle out inside of 6 rounds.

    Excuse me,

    is it opposite day today?

Louis fought bigger man than Lyle? Louis median opponents were 193lb. Good big man? Carnera, Abe Simon, B. Baer?

I can see with one eye half closed on boxrec that Lyle fought significantly bigger man.
