The whole thing with the rankings being frozen definitely worked against him.

Why did Archie Moore despise him?

Also from what I read, the police came to the home of Bivins daughter and her husband for a complaint of child abuse. While there, one of the cops found Bivins in the attic with an infected wound and a blanket with feces on it and he seemed to not know where he was. The cops had him removed from the home and had his daughter and son in law charged with elder abuse.

Again, it may have helped him. Not just the rankings were frozen, but also the careers of his some of his stiffest comp in every division. Without that he likely wouldnt even have won a “duration” championship and may have wound up with several losses that move him from the “what if” category to the “never was” category. Like I said, Conn and Louis would have been comfortable favorites over him for good reason. If he actually fights them and loses his mystique of being this guy supposedly prevented by outside forces from fighting the champs is gone and hes just another footnote on their records. Its an awful big assumption that his career is better without ww2. It might answer more questions but Bivins fans might not like those answers.

The big thing they have going for them is that they are easily available going way back. If the NBA ratings were available, I would use them. From the number I have been able to see, I think the NBA ratings were often better.

The Police Gazette also had rankings, which may have been the best of all. I really enjoyed that tabloid. Too bad it went out of business.

Up until the 1970s when it was taken over by latin american despots the NBA at least had a rhyme and reason to how it rated fighters and tried to elevate the sport beyond the bull**** that we saw in Dempseys era and previous where champions acted like kings and wrote their own ticket, indefinately camping on championships.

Fleischer was often arbitrary and motivated by self interest. The thing that pisses me off about Ring rankings today is that people not only hold them to this high standard which they werent but typically use the annual rankings on boxrec to reinforce their argument. Which is silly because they are only one snapshot in time, not usually indicative of the time in question.

There used to be a Yahoo site that had the ratings month by month, however, it disappeared. Is there a good reference site for historical ratings by month.

Boxing Illustrated started printing the NBA ratings alongside their ratings. Often there wasn’t much difference.

Archie and Jimmy shared a lot of opponents and the unwritten rule on the circuit was that if a guy was booked to meet another guy soon after you didn’t hurt him. It just meant two guys would miss a payday. Archie said Jimmy would deliberately ruin things by going too hard on the no hopers, which meant a lot of guys went without paydays waiting for guys to recover. There was no need to crucify these guys but according to Archie Jimmy still did it. He basically had him down as a cheap shot artist. The only guy he never liked.

Also moore claimed Jimmy hit Archie when he was down as well. Moore said he couldn’t stand Bivins for this kind of cruelty.

Now if he punched his wife out as well it kind of adds up that Bivins could have been a crumb after all.

And those types always live the longest it seems as Bivins lived to be 92. But who knows. Maybe he changed later in life.

I do know - after he came out of that aged fog he was in - that he could not bring himself to level charges against his daughter. I don't know about the son-in-law though.

I think the Conn situation is kind of unfair either way.

Was it fair for Conn to lose his ranking because he served in the military?

Was it fair for Conn to regain his ranking over someone like Bivins who had been active?

I think both are in a sense unfair, but this is a case proving that life isn't fair.
