I can also think of a case of the opposite: In one of Ali's fights against a lesser known opponent, some time around 1975 (the opponent was a white guy, and that's about all I can remember). Once it's clear the guy is hopelessly outclassed Ali begins pulling punches in the most obvious way imaginable. And I mean it's completely unmistakable. You'll know the fight I'm talking about if you've seen it. (Anyone know off the top of their head? I could find it with a bit of searching.)

Both Floyd & ET called Ali, "Clay"....in the mid-60's.

True. He showed him he could knock him out in the first and then purposely slowed down after hurting him in the first to prolong it

Wasn't "taxi drivers" brought up a few times in the inside ring conversations?

Jack Johnson vs Tommy Burns - watch the film of the fight as Jack actually physically swung Tommy around bodily preventing him from falling.

I know, Ali and Terrell were room mates for a while and sparred together Ernie knew him as Clay and without thinking referred to him as such. No doubt he wanted to put a hurting on them ,but imo he tried to stop both of them.

Do you have any reason to believe this other than your eye test? (I'm not saying this is a bad reason, just wondering if you have something I can evaluate without relying on my own eye test.)

Good guess, but I remember this fight being in color. I'm going through boxrec right now.

Not really I read Floyd's post fight opinion and Ernie's.Patterson said he didn't think Ali could punch too much.Terrell was a durable guy anyway, once he got the eye injury he covered up and basically concentrated on going the route.Fighters are very difficult to get out of there when they settle for survival Tua v Lewis? Tucker & Smith v Tyson?

Dont matter. He was intentionally carrying the men to dish out more pain. He obviously could have stepped on the gas and accomplished what he wanted sooner.
