Anthony Joshua could be made to wait for a Deontay Wilder fight after the WBA ordered him to sign for a mandatory title defence against Alexander Povetkin "within 24 hours".

WBC champion Wilder has yet to return a contract for a massive unification fight with Joshua for all the world heavyweight belts and the WBA have grown impatient with the drawn-out negotiations, ordering the British star to instead fulfil his title obligations to Povetkin.

WBA president Gilberto Mendoza had granted Joshua an extra month to continue talks for a fight with Wilder, but with a deal yet to be agreed, he has called on AJ to finalise a bout with mandatory challenger Povetkin.

Povetkin is the mandatory challenger for Joshua's WBA belt
Gilberto Mendoza said: "Today the WBA requested an answer from Anthony Joshua's team regarding his fight with the mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin.

"The WBA have allowed over a month extension to negotiations with Povetkin and also ongoing discussions with Deontay Wilder.

"It appears the Wilder team have not returned the contract for the fight and therefore we are requesting a date for the Joshua versus Povetkin fight with immediate effect."

Watch Wilder agree in 48 hours and claim AJ ducked him.......

I wonder if Povetkin put's in a counter offer to whatever Matchroom bid for the purse, maybe $600M "guaranteed" and 24 hours to respond via social media.

Its a good fight, of course wed all prefer aj v wilder but this just further hypes it up and hopefully gives both sides NO EXCUSE to make it afterwards..

Honestly iv been very busy with work and other things to follow the megafight closely so can anyone confirm which side is holding it up from being made? Last i heard ajs team didnt want to sign the fight because the date proposed was to soon and did not give AJ enough time to train.

Atleast after povetkin that reason is no longer valid

Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of major players outside of boxing are also interested in getting involved to put up big money to bring a guy with as much hype as AJ to Russia. Hearn could be in for a shock.

I prefer Povetkin / Joshua anyway.

I think Povetkin is better than Wilder and has a real chance to win. Wilder is just a lucrative sideshow imho, and would be destroyed by either AJ or Povetkin.

Povetkin / AJ is the boxing purists choice.*

*actually I'd prefer seeing Sasha smash Wilder but it is what it is :p

    I doubt it.

Povetkin has already cost him a lot and not delivered. He's clear underdog and how much marketability does he have at 39 years old.

Ryabinsky isnt an idiot who is going to keep throwing money away, i doubt this even goes to purse bids.

WBA has Fres Oquendo ranked as #2 HW challenger, and BJ Flores as #6

Any they expect to be taken seriously ?

I'd take more seriously MVC's claims that Wilder was offered places in one or more Ivy league schools.

    Wilder's master plan is working.
Stall the fight then claim AJ ducked him for Povetkin.
