Very big missmatch.World title holder and former very experienced amateur boxer against domestic/euro level kind of guy.Callum Johnson doesnt even have Campillo/Cloud/Chilemba kind of gatekeeper win to see his level. Callum is gonna get bashed for 100-200k back to domestic level. He is 32 years old already but definitely not ready for this.May be he had slim chance after 2-3 gatekeeper tests and im not even confident he could pass those as well.
I wonder if Beterbievs age and inactivity will finally creep up with him. Beterbiev has a lot going on, and one has to wonder how it affects him mentally. The court case vs GYM, inactivity, age and an unknown opponent. I would not bet any real money on this.
Beterbiev is contesting the court hearing which will see him tied to GYM till 2021. If Beterbiev does not want to fight, he will not fight. He hates GYM. Eddie and his DAZN money can just buy the contract from GYM and GYM will not have to go through all this headache and still get any potential future earnings they would have made with Beterbiev upfront. In turn, Eddie gets the LHW boogeyman that everyone has avoided and the cash to accelerate his career and to become a key player in the LHW division.
And yet, Eddie doesn't have to buy the contract. And why would he? Beterbiev has been a headcase for GYM. Beterbiev can still fight, even if he is in a legal battle with GYM.
Why would Beterbiev want to split his purse between two promotors, especially when he has just taken one to court and lost against?
Johnson is a hero with massive balls. Shame on the rest of the division who have all ducked the Russian monster. He can pat himself on the back for being so brave when he wakes up in the recovery position.
Like minemax said, this is not up to Beterbiev. He can fight or choose not to. He made his choices and now he has to live with them. And i dont think he would be splitting his purse with Matchroom, but who knows. Eddie buying Beterbievs contract or attempting to do so, has nothing to do with Beterbiev wanting it.
October? For real? Such a long wait. Light heavyweight is at all time low right now but good match up nevertheless.
BRITISH champion Callum Johnson will challenge the IBF light-heavyweight world titlist Artur Beterbiev. The bout will take place on October 6 in the United States, with New York or Chicago likely venues. Johnson’s career has been plagued by inactivity but he won the British title, knocking out Frank Buglioni in March in one round. He now goes right into the deep end of world boxing. Beterbiev was a fearsome amateur. He is only 12 bouts into his professional career but has won all 12 inside the distance. He won the IBF world title when knocked out Enrico Koelling in the last round of their clash in November 2017 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno. Beterbiev has not fought since but he will be a significant favourite against Johnson. Johnson’s trainer Joe Gallagher has previously told Boxing News, “We’re going to fight one of the hardest punchers in world boxing. Everyone goes on about ‘GGG’ but this is the ‘GGG’ of the light-heavyweights. Obviously you’ve got [Dmitry] Bivol in there as well, [Adonis] Stevenson, and now you’ve also got Beterbiev. Callum Johnson, there’s no fear in him. He’s coming off a fantastic win over Frank Buglioni and I’ve always known he’s a powerful puncher. He was a good amateur, he fought Russians on the amateur circuit.”
