That's the weird thing about it - there are so many photos of Jack Johnson already that it was obviously not him so not sure how you can publish a picture of someone who is not Jack Johnson - particularly as there are only about 6 photos in the whole book!
No, I immediately recognized that photo as Battling Jim Johnson. Or if it isn't, then there are a lot of other photos of the same guy that have also been mislabeled.
There is the same photo of Jim Johnson in the Sam Langford book by Clay Moyle its a full size and contemporarily captioned as Jim Johnson.
I'm not sure where it's originally from, I don't think I've seen it any other place than Getty images. My best guess is it has something to do with the early production of the Hollywood film Gentleman Jim, and this is an an early shot of an actor who ultimately was not cast. I've seen the Corbett documentary you're alluding to, and it's pretty cool. The most interesting thing to me was the extended recordings of his voice, which sounded not at all like I would imagine. (But do they ever?)
