Callum Johnson is just as old and has been even more inactive and he’s been through a lot of **** as well, his father passed away he failed a medical for one fight and the buglioni fight was his first fight since 2016 and it went one round. Artur will ko him and brutally I myself will be betting serious money on that.
What a waste of a career. How the hell can a judge rule in favor of a promoter who doesn't promote a fighter? We will never know how good Beterbiev could have been. Beterbiev will KTFO Johnson. Johnson will be laid out cold.
If you want to get an idea what Beterbiev will do to this Johnson, look at what he did to a previous Johnson. Start at the 14:30 mark. This content is protected
Johnson is really really good, don't be so sure about that. He's IMO the best LHW the UK has to offer, and sadly has suffered from the same kind of poor career management and long layoffs as Beterbiev has, they both will have a lot of pent up frustrations to unleash on each other, either way it goes, I doubt it'll last long, but both have a good enough chin, I doubt they'll be laid out cold.
Depends on the contract. The judge came to the conclusion that GYM held up to their end of the bargain.
Even though Johnson looks very Scottish, has a Scottish sounding name, and represented Scotland as an amateur (he has a Scottish grandmother), including winning gold at the Commonwealth games and captained the Scottish team, he's actually English. AFAIA, Beterbiev, has no Scottish blood or ties to Scotland, though.
Unfortunately, signing with one of the small handfuls of big time promoters is close to a must for fighters hoping to reach the big time. Beterbiev... hmm. Safe to say he never reaches the lofty expectations the lot of ya'll had for him. But he does seem like a very good fighter. Would like to see him in with top opponents.
Anthony Joshua’s September meeting with Alexander Povetkin isn’t the only title fight planned for Eddie Hearn’s slate of bouts on DAZN. The promoter told THE RING on Tuesday that he’s cut a deal to place his fighter Callum Johnson’s light heavyweight title challenge of Artur Beterbiev on the streaming platform on Oct. 6. The IBF mandatory title bout was set to be auctioned off at a purse bid on Tuesday, but Hearn was able to complete a deal with Yyon Michel, who promotes Beterbiev. Beterbiev, a 33-year-old Russian puncher who resides in Montreal, was embroiled in a legal dispute with Michel, but the Canadian promoter won the battle in court earlier this month. Top Rank hoped to sign Beterbiev (12-0, 12 knockouts), and had even promoted his victory over Enrico Koelling in November after they won a purse bid that Michel elected not to participate in. “I have not met with Beterbiev but we are communicating through his management’s team,” Michel told ESPN. “After the court decision I had an excellent and cordial meeting with them. “Our contract has been declared valid [until 2021]. We both have obligations and responsibilities and we will continue to honor it. You can expect the IBF light heavyweight champion to be very active defending his title or in unifications.” Michel promotes lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, as well as Eleider Alvarez, who will challenge division kingpin Sergey Kovalev in August on HBO. With three of the top 175-pounders in the world fighting under the GYM banner, there should be plenty of meaningful light heavyweight title fights coming to Canada. But first, Beterbiev must deal with Johnson (17-0, 12 KOs), a 32-year-old Brit who is coming off a first-round TKO of Frank Buglioni.
Yeah Johnson is much better than euro/domestic level. Unfortunately Beterbiev is all wrong for him and will give him a bit of beating with a probable late stoppage IMHO.
The judge ruling was more or les as follows: a) although GYM hadn't come up with the agreed number of fights, other external factors played a large role (injury, Ramadan, etc.) b) any failings of GYM as per a) are amply compensated by the fact that Beterbiev got the chance to become world champion (which was not part of the agreement), and are thus not serious enough to warrant a break of contract.
The thing with Beterbiev is that it's hard to know how good he is. All his opponents to date have been in survival mode from early on and it's hard to judge Beterbiev on that. Some here feel that he's very basic, or even plodding, and too open; thus an elite boxer would outbox him fairly easily; whereas others point to his impressive strength and feel that he might be too much for the other LHWs, after all he gave the elite HWs fits in the amateurs with his inside strength. I can see the arguments from both sides; I only hope we get to find out a bit more about Beterbiev before he's too old or retires.
