Was Charles Martin genuinely terrible or just got caught cold?

All I can remember from the Joshua fight is that Martin's trunks didn't even fit right. So I'll go with terrible

Terribly lazy/lethargic and got caught cold. Martin’s apathy makes Stiverne from the 2nd Wilder fight look like someone with the fire of a young Duran/Tyson by comparison.

He's pretty bad. Some natural ability/power, but his mental game is clearly awful both in the ring and outside of it. He fought no one on his path to Joshua besides Glazkov in one of the lowest quality title fights in HW history. He definitely got caught cold, but he also just accepted it and laid there laughing. I'd say at very best he's Dimitrenko/Gerald Washington level

Too slow to be a player in the heavyweight division atm. Also his offence was poor although his KO record says otherwise...its basically club fighters he was knocking out. Think I remember his footwork being half decent. That's about all he had tho. Always looked like he was fighting in treacle.

Was never gonna stand up to Joshua's offence. I,d say pretty terrible. At least brazeale...who,s also too slow...is a unit that can take a pounding. Always gives him a chance. Martin in his first real test turned out to be fragile to be any good for top level. Too slow. Lacked explosiveness to make him anything but a k/o to happen at the top level.

Here’s a perspective for you all to consider.

I spoke at length with Sugar Hill from Kronk about Charles Martin, and how he ended up at the Kronk. Sugar says that he genuinely believes that’s charles Martin could be the new Lennox Lewis. He said that when he showed up at Kronk he was operating purely on instinct and raw ability - and sugar thinks he serves kudos for that - but since then they have started rebuilding him from the ground up and genuinely believe in him as a future top heavyweight. Seriously.

So there may be more to this than meets the public eye.

it's a shame glasgovs leg gave out because he was the only decent guy he faced besides Joshua and it wasn't really a win

to me the jury is out but he's not fighting anybody

Haha don't forget the ring walk with the crown.

Yeah he was average at best, I've seen worse and I've seen far far better, I don't think he was completely useless, let's not forget he won the title because his opponents knee gave out, winning a world title because your opponent has glass knees and then getting a 5 million payday against AJ is amazing.

He done well for himself all things considered.

Martin himself was never the issue. It was the bogus ratings of the IBF that put him there. This has been the trend for years: put undefeated guys in title fights too early, and expect big things from them. He's not as bad as he looked against Joshua, but he should have been fighting Molinas, Arreolas, and Duhaupases for awhile before getting a big fight. Shame on the sanctioning body, not Martin.

Breazeale isn't slow at all. His problem is that he takes forever to get going, in every fight he's ever had. He usually comes alive in round 3 or 4, and then can look rather spectacular.

His problem vs AJ was that he simply fought scared.

Got very lucky to get the strap to begin with, and was matched way way above his level. As a result he was brutally KTFO.

Thats Charles Martin. Now he has gone back to fighting guys at his level waiting for another big money pay day where again he will be way out of his depth but will be well compensated.

He was pretty bad. He looked bad in every fight I managed to get on him before the AJ fight, hands out, chin in the air, boxercise type arm punches, leaping gazelle footwork. Sometimes fighters that don't look good on film aren't actually all that bad, but sometimes they're exactly what they look like, and Martin simply isn't that good.
