I'm as big a Benton fan as there is. That being said. I dont think he beats any of the fab 4 but he doesnt get stopped or embarrassed either.
I think he loses tight decisions to all of them. BUT if theres a trilogy I can see him easily taking one of the 3 fights. In fact I believe he would.

I think Benton could beat every one of the fab 4. HAGLER would be the hardest, but Benton could do it. George was a natural middleweight who had a great chin and fantastic abilities. Prime Benton beats them all first fight.

    How good was Benton?

I honestly don't know - from his record alone he beat some good ones but also lost to more of them than he beat by the looks of it. I'm surprised anyone would pick him over Hagler but I don't know enough about him as a fighter to contradict it. I'm just surprised that's all.

Im not prepared to say he beats them all like that. I will say that he makes a good account of himself and he has a reasonable chance at victory

This is a good thread idea. Thus, of course, it's ignored by most. Sad

I see him beating SRL and Duran but Hagler bests him by SD and Hearns is a toss up....Benton beat some big names and when lost it was to very good fighters but he like Hagler fought many of the same guys more than once....Hagler seemed to be more consistent against top fighters.

I did not realize since Benton by the 80's was already making a name as a trainer but his career was ending as Haglers begun...10 yrs earlier and it could have happened.

Benton never beat anyone as good as the Fab 4 and lost to several that werent as good. He was a very good fighter but this would be a bridge too far.

    Someone had to say it.

He did beat Giardello tho and had a close one with Carter. Some good trivia also says he beat future heavyweight champ Jimmy Ellis.

I think his weight advantage brings back SRL and Duran a bit. Stylistically he is unsuited to Leonard but well suited to Duran imo. I think he'd decision Roberto.

I love Giardello but he wasnt on the same level as the fab 4, at least not in 1962.

Losing a closeone to Carter means absolutely nothing to me. Carter was nothing compared to the fab 4.

I think regardless of any size advantage the class of all four would tell in the end. Size only gets you so far.

He sparred with Liston right before Liston became champion. They sparred 4 rounds I think and Liston found it impossible to land anything on him.
