I wondered if Corbett might win the re-match,considering he did so well in the first half of the fight. Reading up on it, Fitz began to get to him later and though he was the one with the marks of battle on him , Corbett was described as having a worried look on his face as the fight went on.Corbett had no trouble outboxing Fitz early on and made him miss badly with his punches, all the while landing on his nose and mouth.Jim had Fitz's nose and mouth bleeding and a left hook had Fitz wobbling before another put him down for a 9 count.Corbett had 60 seconds left in the round to finish Fitz ,but couldn't do it and the Englishman soon regained his composure. In the 7th round Corbett was the better man at long range but was never again able to significantly hurt Fitz, whose punches began landing more frequently and with more impact. Corbett began to look for clinches as the fight went on. We know what happened in the 14th ,and having done it once I can't really see why Fitz shouldn't be able to duplicate the feat again.
Well.. Like they never fought a rematch and braddock kicked his ass when they acually fought everything you say is speculation and braddock is better than baer.. Deal with it
Corbett had boxed four rounds in the past three years, seven rounds in the past five. I think his size and ability combined with the experience of the first fight and conditioning he could have improved on his earlier performance.
Kicked his ass is one of the biggest overstatements of a fight Ive ever seen. The last fight I would call an ass kicking is Beaddock-Baer. Baer did very little in the fight and Braddock was marginally better in the best performance of his career. Baer could improve greatly on his performance, Braddock couldnt and in fact as limited as Braddock was and as unreliable its entirely possible he performs worse the second time around. This is why everyone but you picked Baer to win the rematch.
His inactivity may well have been a factor in his fading as the fight progressed and he had something like13/14lbs on Fitz.hving shaken off the ring rust he might have improved . I usually think that a fighter, having ko'd a guy ,the rematch mostly goes the same way,of course there are many exceptions.
I usually do too but he was so much better early on that I dont think you can discount the inactivity. Also, it wasnt a concussive knockout that would have lingering effects but a solar plexus punch (which could also hint at less than stellar conditioning). Its one of the few times Id think a ko victim could come back and win the rematch.
That's a good point,it wasn't like Corbett took a bad beating,he had the wind knocked out of him which momentarily took his legs away.He was sure pissed off when he recovered.
Corbett was a crybaby in defeat. Fitz came on later and likely won the round before ( 13th ) with hard slugging. He was determined to catch up to Corbett who was not only out speeding him, but out landing him in the clinches. Corbett actually has an inside game. He lands hooks, body shots and uppercuts and mixing in some dirty break tactics such as using his elbow on Fitz's neck to break away when needed. In the 14th round, Fitz set up his shot to the body with a quick feint to the head. Corbett's guard when up and Fitz drove his shot home. There was also a left hook landed after the body shot that is not on film. Reason being back then, people asked the film operator to rewind the KO, and the extra wear and tear resulted washed out frames to view today.
Baer was motived it two fights. One vs Scheming as he was part Jewish and wanted to show the world a Jewish boxer could beat a German in a fair fight, the other time vs Carnera for the title. If you ask me there is a chance Braddock who was a heavy underdog ( 10-1 underdog ) won because Baer tanked it. Boxing had its share of problems with fixes in the 1930's
I don't agree, Max , like everyone else took Braddock for granted and it cost Maxie. Boxing is filled with examples of taking a fighter lightly and losing to an inferior opponent. As Sean O Grady said one night a C + fighter can beat an A fighter if he ain't ready.
I don't know that he tanked it, but I watched the whole fight and looks like Max thought he'd just hit Jimmy and go home. You are right about his motivated fights.
