    Sarcasm aside,

    It is a bit embarrassing a white non punching middleweight did much better against Dempsey’s title opposition than Dempsey did

    Dempsey knew that it would be a total war, and one that he could win only by being in tip top shape. He also knew that he ran the risk of being made look foolish if he had a bad night. He knew that he's be expected to beat the smaller man and probably wouldn't get the right amount of credit for beating Greb. Finally, he could make the same or better money fighting guys stylistically suited to him.

    I think if you lump all these reasons together, you probably have something close to the answer.

    If they hada fought, Dempsey would have probably knocked him out early ,it would have being along the same line's as Tyson v Spinks .A big build up with a good few giving Greb a great chance, and then the actual fight where Jack In killer mode rips him apart. Just like Tyson v spinks actually happened. And years later people wouldn't be saying "if only they had met ,it coulda being a great fight".

    Brennan actually was ahead of Dempsey in a title fight. Dempsey won late via a come back type of KO. Its on film and Brennan was rather average.

    Evidently, Greb was the better in sparring with Dempsey. Although he could not punch, Greb was very durable so he might have beaten Dempsey in a shorter fight. Doc Kearns made sure that never happened.

    That was the 1922 version of Tunney, I believe he grew a bit after that?

    Conn was ahead of Louis ,Walcott was ahead of Marciano,Klitschko was ahead of Lewis, Fitz was ahead of Jeffries 2nd fight,Corbett was ahead of Jeffries 1st fight, Sharkey was ahead of Dempsey.et al.

    You have to be there at the finish to win!lol

    Exactly .. Greb would have been a spoiler at heavyweight for Dempsey .. no punch but fast and slippery ..I certainly think a prime , motivated Dempey hurts him over the distance ..
