Mike Weaver vs Floyd Patterson

The Weaver from his first fight with Holmes vs the Patterson who avenged his loss against Johannson.

 

I'd favor Patterson but Weaver definitely has a punchers chance.

 

Weavers certainly wasn't the protected fighter that some were and he seemed to blossom later but I think his chin holds up but he loses a decision

 

Me too. Weaver might score a knockdown, though

 

Would you rate Patterson a harder puncher than Holmes?

 

The single punch that Floyd hit Ingo with...that left the Swede comatosed and his leg twitching would be classified as a "hard punch", (but Weaver knocked Tate out with a left hook. Tate laid unconscious, face down and spread eagle on the canvas as he was counted out)

 

Really hard to tell with this one.

Patterson's speed might pose all kinds of problems for Weaver but Weaver was good and hit really hard. Floyd's toilet paper chin may not appreciate the incoming. I think I'd lean towards Weaver in that Weaver might come back from a shaky start but if he hurt Floyd I think he would finish him. Not a lot in this one for me.

 

Weaver had the better body build.

 

I think Weaver can land that left hook of his to the body on Floyd. If so, the bout is his. Patterson holds those hands up real high but that body is sure open. Nobody wants to be eating Weaver's left hook to the breadbasket.

Nice back and forth type fight and Weaver will be hurt at some point. the question is does he shake it off and weather the storm like the Coetzee fight or does he lose his legs like the first Smith fight?

 

No not really Holmes was a much larger stronger man...the Holmes uppercut was IMO his hardest punch

 

I don't know. Patterson seemed to be able to floor guys more easily with single shots. Leon Spinks and Johannson were around the same size. And I think Patterson would have stopped Leon more convincingly and Holmes stops Johannson, but not like Patterson did

 

I liked Mike Weaver he was strong and could punch, but his chin was never great but he fought some big hitters. I think Floyd wins a decision.

 

Weaver's shot came in the 15th and he was behind on all scorecards and a stoppage of Tate wasn't exactly rare. Longhorn, why put italics around hard punch? Ingo out!! Leg twitching, blood coming out of his right ear?! Jeez, I thought he was dead! To be fair, Floyd had softened him up a bit prior to his HOF left hook but, if he hit ANYONE with that shot they're either: Out like a light, knocked down and hurt bad, or wobbled and hurt (the ATG IRON jawed guys). Little Floyd could CRACK with that LH!
Harder hitter than Holmes? Larry had no numbing LH, much like Ali (the Greatest put Oscar down with one in the final round as well). Larry's straight right and, especially, his uppercut may trump Patterson's but on the flip side we all have marveled at the sudden multi-combos that Floyd could unleash at any moment (too rare IMO). His passivity against opponents might tarnish his rep a bit but, as I've said before, that's why we love him! My $0.02

Patterson didn't seem to have much of a right hand, but his left hook may have been harder than any of Larry's punches.
