I have to respectfully disagree. You can make a case for him being undefeated. I felt he edged Holy in the rematch and although badly declining got the DQ wins over Golata and in my opinion broke him mentally which brought on the low blows. Did he underachieve yes. I'll attribute that to conditioning which is no ones fault but his own. I think he was a hell of a fighter and still the only big man who could kick your ass in phone booth warfare.
Barry McGuigan, although Barry did a lot for Boxing and united Irish people and became a celebrity and i for one applaud him for that, his record is not that of a HOF, his personality yes maybe.
This thread begins and ends with Gatti. That bum belongs nowhere near the Hall, and honestly, he wouldn't be in the Hall if he wasn't white and hadn't offed himself.
Not mentioned yet, but I don't think Winky Wright should be in there. Just a good solid fighter, to me anyway. just look at the exposure of being on HBO has helped guys get elected.
Its called Hall of fame and not hall of skills. Gatti had a big impact to the sport and inspired many people to walk into a gym.
Not sure how many kids have ever walked into a gym and said "Teach me how to get my brains beat out like Arturo Gatti, cause I'd love to have CTE."
I agree he isn't HOF. He was special though he was guaranteed excitement. I don't think I've seen anyone quite like him in that sense. Ken Buchanon doesn't belong IMO.
The bar is much lower in boxing to get in than most other sports. I dont know that he was great. He was very good and held the title briefly. Look at baseball Don Mattlingly was Great with a capitol G but he won't get in because they make it real tough.
Jem Ward is a bit of an odd one. Maybe he should be in, but much less so than other early ones that aren't in. John Morrissey is probably even worse. Bill Richmond is also odd. Really bizzaire selection in the pioneer category considering they didn't include George Taylor, or Jack Slack!
