I've read here that Greb has a live chance of beating Jack Dempsey over 10 rds. How does he do against these other great middles over the traditional championship 15rds distance? Please no silly," he wouldn't be able to beat all of them at once" jokes, it wasnt that funny 10 years ago.
I'll.say he loses to Robinson ,monzon and Hagler. On point's to Ray ,by stoppage to Hagler and Monzon .The one I see him possibly beating is Ketch, maybe by surprise late ko or by decision.
Robinson had his hands full against LaMotta who was a poor mans Greb. So Greb. Hagler had his hands full with Antuofermo who was a very very poor mans Greb. So Greb. Monzon's best wins came against smaller, older fighters and he didn't always look great doing it. He ducked his number one challenger for three years and generally feasted on a weak division. He never came close to fighting anyone of the caliber of a Harry Greb. So Greb. The three best fighters Ketchel fought: Klaus, Papke, and Johnson he either went life and death with or lost to. Toss out the Johnson fight because of the size and stylistic fights and you can say that Greb would have been, by far, the most talented, accomplished, experienced, and dangerous opponent Ketchel ever fought. So Greb.
Greb's rough style and aggression would suit him well against Sugar Ray. That s the only way to fight a guy like Ray. Probably applies to Hagler as well except I think Marvin may handle the rough stuff better.
Greb fought very competively with Tunney who was a big lightheavyweight decent sized heavyweight and I have seen Tunney fight on film, one of the most impressive boxers of the day. Greg also fought everyone and did great. I think Greb is the man to beat on that list and may very well come out on top
I think you read Dempsey saying he'd fight Greb and ducked him. Ketchel is wildly over rated. No defense at all. Greb clowns him and has the durability of a heavyweight, limiting the " puncher's chance " that Ketchel has. Monzon does not wow me. He won many of his most significant matches vs smaller men, based on being the bigger man, having a good chin, and being active. I think Greb would prove harder to hit and tougher than all of Monzon’s opponents, and likely faster too. So I'm taking Greb here who gave Tunney a hard time. IMO Tunney's speed and power is better than Monzon's and he's harder to catch cleanly as well. I'd favor Hagler over Greb, based on Styles and Hagler’s power. To quote Gene Tunney, you have to fight Greb. Out boxing or countering is not going to work. Robinson's best stuff by far is a welter weight. Yet he lost to Randy Turpin ( SRR age 30 ), Ralph Jones ( SRR age 33 ) Gene Fulmer ( SRR age 35 ) in middle weight matches. The jump from 147 to 160 is a pretty big one, so I'd pick Greb here on points.
I'm soo surprised at yr take on these fights princess. You really think Monzon wins. That's why always the vitriol. I can predict yr opinion every time. Any great middleweight threatens yr boys standing. So you hate that middleweight. Btw, Vito as any kind of GREB? About as stupid a comparison as you could make. But what else is expected from a writer of fiction.
W 15 vs Ketchel Not impressed by Ketchel Draw vs Robinson 1951 Robinson looks damn good on film. His hand speed, power, body work, and stamina make him a daunting task for Greb. On the flip side Greb has good hand speed, perhaps better stamina, and is relentless. Compared to the notable swarmers SRR faced, Greb has (inferred from accounts) much better hand speed and foot speed than Lamotta, and is much bigger than Basilio. Too close to call. W 15 vs Monzon I don't see Monzon keeping Greb off him unless they bring in Joe Cortez or Kenny Bayless. L 15 vs Hagler The Marvelous One is a complete package, as long as he fights the right game plan. A hard, hard man. This would be a worthy pay per view.
Lamotta was very often compared to Greb in his prime. Antuofermo, an aggressive, strong, durable guy without a big punch who pressured. Yeah Id say he was a very poor mans comparison to Greb. The bottom line is that very durable volume punchers are tough to beat. If you cant get the guy out of there or discourage him you have to outpoint him. I dont see any of these guys stopping Greb or discouraging him and all of them except Ketchel were pretty conservative and were more comfortable dictating the pace. I dont see them being able to do that with Greb. Monzons biggest assett was the size advantage he used over his smaller opponents but Greb fought bigger, stronger, harder hitting guys than Monzon on a regular basis so I dont see that being an issue for him. I give Robinson the best chance with him because of his combination of speed, power, and most importantly timing. I think Ketchel would be the easiest followed by Hagler, then Monzon. I think Ketchel was too crude and wide open to land one of his bombs. How is Hagler going to beat Greb? Is he going to stop him? No. Land more punches? No. Wear him out? No. Was he stronger? No. Faster? No. Harder to hit? No. He might have had better fundementals but I think that would actually work against him against someone as fast, tireless, durable, busy, and unorthodox as Greb.
I didn't know that about Jake. Antuofermo I saw twice from ringside, he was a face first plodding swarmer without speed, imo I don't think of Greb that way.Make no mistake Greb is easily top 4 middleweight for me in fact probably number 1,and there is no doubt he is my P4P number1.I just find your reasons rather unexpected if that is the right way to phrase it.
