I was watching Quarry vs Ali and Frazier and his head movement was far better than Wilder`s is, he dodged 4 of Ali`s punches at a time he dodged and blocked a large percentage of Frazier`s punches in their classic first fight, also Wilder wouldn`t be throwing as many punches as Frazier did, meaning he`s be less likely to catch Quarry all that much, so who wins in your eyes, would Wilder`s reach and power be too much in a fantasy scenario?
I don't know. Quarry had better fundamentals and rumor has it that he out boxed Foreman in sparring. So if that's true, he may have been the one to break Wilders undefeated streak. On the other hand, Wilder with his power and reach would be dangerous
Quarry would be over matched if Wilder could actually fight. Say what you will about Quarry, but the guy could fight. He was very well schooled. Wilder on the other hand is an over sized athlete trying to learn how to fight, while being the heavy weight champion of the world. He looks so amateurish to me I refuse to watch him fight. Watching him reminds me how far world class boxing has fallen. Wilder would have to blitz Quarry and hope that his size and strength will compensate for his lack of skill. But in my opinion Wilder would be counter punched until unconsciousness, those round house punches and slaps he uses, would be easily slipped and countered by a world class fighter like Quarry was. Wilder isn't very fast, and his stamina isn't good . His size ,strength, and athleticism, and lack of world class opposition are the reasons he's a World champ in today's fight game. I've always said in a different era then the one he fought in, A focused Quarry would've been heavy weight champ.
At heavyweight, you can throw out the rules at times in preference for athleticism at times. Baer, Willard, early Foreman... hell, Bonecrusher, Berbick later on. Wilder seems more a modern day Baer than anything. He has big time pop and a better chin than advertised. A prime, healthy Quarry would be the best boxer that Wilder has faced but would be short (literally) in many other departments.
Yeah Quarry has the skill and probably the power to deck Wilder. On second thought, no probably about it as he wobbled Lyle and sent Shavers to la la Land. But he'd be giving up a lot in height and reach and he couldn't eat too many from Wilder.... his chin was good but not that good. Had he fought say, George Foreman, it could have told us how well he'd do vs Wilder, as a 70s Foreman had similar power and a similar style (though Foreman showed better technical skills), although he wasn't as tall and long and may have been stronger. But Foster, Shavers and Lyle had great punching power, too. He beat all 3 and stopped 2 out of 3.
The fighters that were catching Quarry threw far more shots than Wilder does, I hardly think Wilder could match Frazier`s work rate and it is more difficult to evade shots when you go toe to toe in the fight of the year with a legend that`s what Povetkin is going to find out vs AJ and he`s no Quarry, we`ve yet to see if AJ will get to Frazier`s level.
Mike Quarry got knocked out by Foster who was a LH who got destroyed Ali and Frazier who both also had a tough time with Quarry, specifically Frazier.
