I've been watching some historic fights recently that took place in the outdoor arena at Caesar's Palace. From what I understand, it was a temporary structure built over one of the parking lots at Caesar's and adjacent to the more permanent structure of the Sports Pavilion. Both venues have long since been pulled down (a swimming pool now sits where the arena once was, apparently). In terms of super fights, it has to be a contender as boxing's greatest ever venue: Holmes-Ali, Leonard-Hearns, Hagler-Hearns,Leonard-Hagler,Bowe-Holyfield 2 (fan man and all that) are among the greatest events in boxing history and they all took place under the stars in the outdoor arena. Anyway, there's just something special about an outdoor boxing ring with fighters performing under the sun (McGuigan-Cruz) or at dusk (Hearns-Duran) so I was wondering if anyone on here ever went to the arena in person and has any memories of it and the fights they saw there. And if you did not visit in person but you have memories of it regardless, let me know your thoughts.
Not sure if I'm correct but I think I read that there were 2 different outdoor parking lot sites where they set up the ring n stadium at cesears. N the "fighters performing in the sun" reminded me of fenech v nelson. ( not sure if that was ceasars or the mirage) N even the second fight in aust was outdoor (princess park) in the sun. Loved them outdoor super fights, that's when I was hooked on boxing particularly Leonard hearns 2, the war.
Old Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds deserve consideration as boxing's greatest ever outdoor venues in the USA.
Just wondering if Tyson ever fought outside at ceasers palace. Seemed to be a Bob arum promoted fighters thing.
