He did better than I thought but his head is so upright Bellew stands a better chance against Usyk because of this.

He's only had 15 pro fights.

Interesting matchups. While we should probably wait until Usyk is retired to see what the final picture looks like, there's a couple things to keep in mind....

    1) he'd have a size and reach advantage over most except Holyfield.

    2) except for Holyfield (who didn't have a great track record vs southpaws), none of the above had much experience vs good southpaws because boxing trainers of the time forced southpaws to convert to orthodox.

This means taking a really skilled southpaw vs fighters of the era would be a significant advantage for the southpaw as the sparring to prepare for someone like Usyk didn't even exist. The first lefty heavyweight title challenger didn't cone around until Mildenberger in 1966.

That was the World Series of boxing. Amateur fights with pro-like rules and scoring. It's the launching pad for professionals these days, far above the Olympics.

    I recommend following it.

Usyk has a top chin tested vs super heavyweights. He's got a near Holyfield type of chin, Calzaghe like ability to take the bullets out of his opponent's guns, combined with Tunney's quick feet, Ring IQ, and Conditioning to fight at a fast pace over 12 rounds. At 6'3" tall with a 78" reach he can match up with all but a skilled super heavyweight who have a world class jab, longer reach and a powerful fight hand behind it.

Joyce needs a trainer like AJ`s, he`s going to get exposed once he fights a quality pro.

He has the same reach that Tommy Hearns had, I don`t feel he has the same speed that Calzaghe had at the lighter weight and if bulking up to heavy makes him any slower he will have problems. It`s also one thing to say Usyk`s been hit by some super heavyweights, it`s another to say he could have taken Tyson and Bowe`s power punches (and yes I know Holy was knocked out by Bowe in their 3rd bout).

I think you`re completely right that the world series amateur boxing is far better than the olympics, we could have been spared the Audley Harrison hype train had this tournament been around back when he won his crappy gold at the olympics.

His physical dimensions are the same as Ali's, which makes it easy to visualize the size and reach advantages he'd usually have in the eras of 6', 190-200 pounders.

Sadly boxing may be gone from the Olympics after Tokyo 2020. The scoring in 2016 was really bad, some won gold that did not deserve it, others went out early that should have advanced.

Harrison won vs a very weak field in 2000.

Joshua did not deserve to win gold either. Solis clearly beat him early, and some of the other matches were very close, with the home crowd likely influencing the judges a little.

Yes--the World series of amateur boxing is excellent. The judging spot on, and it shows the best amateur talents in the world. When a prospect turns pro, something's his first ten opponents or so are much easier than the completion faced in the World Series of boxing.

Solis would be destroyed by AJ as a pro though, AJ is getting better all the time.

It's interesting that Usyk and Gassiev filled to capacity a 24,000 arena yet Wilder and Ortiz only managed to fill 14,000 of the 18000 Barclay Center seats.

I agree probably the public thinks he`s better than Wilder and more exciting, he throws a lot more punches than Wilder, I even feel he might be well ahead in a bout against both Ortiz and Wilder, I just see Wilder being able to catch up with him eventually but I`d love to see it, also I feel he could beat Ortiz, his hand speed is quicker than that of Luiz who is only getting older and older, at times against Wilder he looked so old, they say he might even have lied about his age because his body looked old, Usyk is young and fresh.

I think AJ has peaked. How long he stays at his best depends on how diligently he watches his weight and trains.

Lately he's been too safety first. My main issue with him as a fan is not that he isn't a worthy champion, but that he fouls / rule bends quickly when hurt.

I would have respected him more if he fought Povektin 2-3 years sooner, but think he's about as good as there is for now. A fight with Usyk 2 years from now, or Wilder next would be significant for his legacy.
