Then why didn't they do it to somebody like that in their own era?

First off..Willard was nearly 38 years old coming off a 4 year layoff. This needs to be established to identify the actual quality of Willard entering the ring. That version of Willard would not crack the top 10 today.

Dempsey was a great puncher. We know that. But these big giants Dempsey fought lost to B level 180lb men. So clearly they didn’t know how to use there size effectively against 185lb men.

I stand by my point. Plenty of 185lbrrs in history would have gone undefeated vs these men.

I stand by my second point. Dempsey beating Greb or Wills in close fights would have been more impressive than what he did to Willard and Fulton.

    “Nobody repeated it”

Nobody was given a chance to repeat it. Pre 1960 Willard was the only super heavyweight other than carnera who won a title who defended against a 185lb man.

Carnera was destroyed early by 197lb Leroy Haynes and 196lb joe Louis. He lost badly to 190lb Larry gains

Willard only fought Dempsey in a 7 year window 1916-1923 so we have no idea how Willard would have done vs the rest of the top 10

I don’t understand your logic. It would have been one thing if Willard in 1919 fought all of the top 10 and didn’t get stopped by any of them. But he only fought Dempsey , 1 bout in 7 years.

Oh, I think he was close enough to his prime vs Meehan. Dempsey was 23, with 59 known fights under his belt when he lost. Are you suggesting he wasn't in his prime then? I'm not buying it, as less than a year after the loss to Meehan Dempsey beat Willard in his finest filmed performance.

He was close to his prime vs Miske ( draw ) the same year in 1918.

Langford was older and past it for Meehan, wasn't he?

Swarmer attackers like Dempsey peak early.

They did. It’s just there weren’t any 37 year old, hill billy farmers posing as world class heavyweights in later eras. Willard didn’t jab well on film, he didn’t punch with good technique, he had no workrate, he was off balance, he had no defense, he had limited boxing ability with no sense of range. A fighter like the 1919 willard not only would have never been Champion in later eras, he also would not have cracked the top 10 in most eras.

I am going to call b*** sh1t on that.

Anybody with a pulse can crack the top ten today!

Even if Willard was as bad as you claim, he would get through somewhere.

Vitally Klitschko was 37 years old, and coming off a four year layoff, when he fought Sam Peter.
Your logic does not add up here.

You are using losses outside these men's primes, to infer that they could have lost to the same sort of men in their primes, and that they did not know how to use their size in their primes.

At the same time you are unable to come up with historical examples, of world class super heavyweights being beaten in this manner while they held a genuine position in the division.
More impressive perhaps, but not a better indicator of how he would have fared against super heavyweights.
There have been more than half a dozen super heavyweight sized fighters who have held the lineal title, and a lot more highly ranked contenders.

While they have not fought 185lb men due to sanctioning reasons, they have fought a lot of men who weighted under the heavyweight limit for much of their careers.

Would they have been better able to replicate Dempsey's feat, if only they had cut weight to less than 185lb?

Basically nobody had replicated what Dempsey did in the past 100 years!
I accept the Louis example as being relevant to this discussion, but not the Gains or Haynes fights.

Those were respectively a green and shot Carnera.
Basically nobody else stopped Willard, apart from Firpo in his last fight.

That includes his fights where he was green, and his fights where he was even further gone.

This post does not contain a single piece of information from the real world.

Just a list of unsubstantiated assertions!

It's a big problem in arguments. People backing up their opinions with their other opinions. Like the classic Fighter X's win over Y isn't so impressive, I think Fighters A, B and C could have done it too! Yeah but they didn't.

It certainly helped Dempsey that from 1916-1922 Willard fought just 1 fight...against Dempsey..

So who were these other men who had a chance to blast Willard’s brains out when he wouldn’t get in the ring?

Who were these other big time fighters Willard proved he could survive against in 1919 other than Dempsey?

We do know Willard in his prime couldn’t defeat 180lb gunboat smith or 178lb tom macaman so Cleary he had known idea how to fight with his tools.

Carnera green against gains in 1932 despite already 50 pro fights into his career???

Carnera “prime” against Louis but “shot” against Haynes which took place in his subsequent fight?

How about 255lb Abe Simon losing badly to Lem Franklin?

    Baer getting destroyed by Barland

Fulton was on a big winning streak when Miske flattened him in 1. Did Fulton take a dive?

Lots of excuses by you but naive to think Willard Simon Baer and Carnera didn’t lose to much smaller men near there primes

Wouldn’t the best indicator to see how Dempsey would fare vs modern super heavyweights would be if he had fought the overwhelming best big man of his own era? Not fighting wills plays into factor here

And by your logic...marciano would have been better off fighting Valdes and baker rather than Charles and Moore because with their size and reach, we would know how he does vs a large ranked heavyweight

Considering it was a couple years after he was already a dying man against Dempsey, either it was a dive, or Dempsey deserves way more credit for that win. You can't play it both ways.

I give Dempsey plenty of credit for beating Fulton it was his best win.

Don’t forget Wills who dominated the same version of Fulton that Dempsey faced

Wills was the best big man of the era. How did Dempsey fare vs him?

So someone more comparible in size to the people we are talking about, beat him not much less convincingly. So what?
We all know he didn't fight Wills. You can blather on about any heavyweight champion's short comings for post after post if you want.
