This month's Ring has Wilfredo Gomez giving his opinions . Best Jab =Carlos Zarate Best Defence=Lupe Pintor Fastest Hands=Salvador Sanchez Best Foot work=Sanchez, with nods to Pintor, andDong KyunYum. Best Chin=Pintor, nod to Sanchez Smartest=Pintor Strongest=Azumah Nelson, nods to Rocky Lockridge,Sanchez,Juan Laporte,Pintor,Zarate,Yum. Best Puncher=Zarate[without doubt]. Best boxing skill=Sanchez, nods to Zarate & Pintor. Bets Overall=Zarate
Another interesting take. Gomez whupped Zarate and was whupped himself by Sanchez tho we did have the weight drama. Zarate was a fantastic puncher but was moving up and didn't land much of anything from memory. Interesting to see Sanchez's handspeed in the spotlight tho i don't recall Gomez fighting many slicksters. Thanks for the info Mac.
Jeez I wonder how a fight with a healthy Zarate that wasnt foul filled would have played out after reading this high assessment. Alot of respect here.
I like this...one of my boxing idols Bazooka Gomez...I'll never forget how he tore Zarate...I almost don't need to even see the vid....I've memorized it.
It would have been interesting if Gomez had managed to fight Chandler, then some of those opinions might have changed.
This is how I feel about The Sanchez live destruction. I've memorized every, pivot, feint, punch, bruise, demoralizing second of the fight. Bazooka was being murdered and everyone was still holding up hope of a Bazooka ko. Gomez hit Sanchez with his usual KO punch in the first, Sanchez sent him to the shadow realm 2 seconds after.
In a funny way Sanchez reminded me of a featherweight Monzon, tall, angular, stoic, and seemly impervious to punishment, with that implacable look on his face. Must be in all our top 3 surely ?
Depends on how he took the question. The best fighter Larry Holmes beat was Muhammad Ali by resume, but he wasn’t the best he fought on the night he fought him.
I’ve always felt that the gulf in difference showed in those fights (Gomez-Zarate and Sanchez-Gomez) weren’t overly indicative of how far apart they were as fighters. Styles make fights of course but Zarate legitimately being sick as a dog factored into his poor display and it was compounded by Gomez having carte blanche on what he could do and get away with. The same way Gomez’s wretched preparation and dismissal of Sanchez’s chances had when they met. I think Gómez style did play into Sánchez’s hands, being the smaller man and having to work his way inside against a wicked counter puncher with a great chin and endless stamina the way Zárate moving up and being a fighter who fought more salt a measured pace would always have his hands full with Gómez’s dynamic offense but these fighters, talent wise seemed almost on a par. I actually think Zarate moving up an extra division and with his more patient, deliberate style and patience is a trickier match for Sanchez (than Gomez was) despite being even smaller than Gomez. I spoke to Nacho Beristain a while ago and asked him what he thought of Sanchez as a boxer and he really didn’t seem to like him or rate him particularly highly. He said his technique was “horrible” and that at 23, he was already on the way down. I was surprised because like most I felt Sanchez was arguably the most talented fighter to come out of Mexico. Nacho believed that the most skilled and best technical Mexican fighters were Marquez, Chavez, Roman, Zarate, Gomez and Olivares. He may have had some long standing vendetta against Sanchez but Nacho has generally always been an honest dude who calls it as it is. Also Gomez seems to have done what most fighters do and selected the guy that made them look best as though admitting a conqueror was better can’t be done. He’s no the only fighter to have done that. I remember Alan Minter picking Finnegan as better than Hagler and Danny Romero picking some dude he blasted 2-3 rounds as better than Tapia.
If Nacho feels that way , it maybe because he didn't particularly like the way he fought. Sanchrz wasn't the typical go forward left hook to the body destroyer which is indicative of most fighters that came out of Mexico during that era. Or , he's being disingenuous, especially with the comment of Sanchez’s Technique was horrible. Which is the very 1st time I've EVER heard anyone critique Sanchez’s skills that . Every fighter Sanchez fought after Lopez was at the least good. With a couple being ATG. Its hard to believe a reputable boxing trainer has that opinion about Sanchez. But if he does, its his opinion. I would love to know what he see's or don't see though.
