1948 Joe Louis vs. Modern Luis Ortiz

I'll vote for Louis as well. But I'll add that Ortiz is no joke and that with his kind of power he'd have a reasonable shot at the upset.

How many, if any, 6'3 skilled, tricky, undefeated 235 pound hard punching southpaws did Louis beat ?

Louis "should" prevail , I don't think it will be easy but a upset is not unreasonable thinking.

 

Never fought a southpaw as a pro.

 

Good fight with Louis never facing a southpaw and being near the end of the trail so to speak,its far from certain he wins this .Then again Ortiz has beaten who?

 

Dunno, I might pick Ortiz. Louis was a shell of himself at that point. I remeber a thread a bit ago where it was concluded he probably had brain damage in one of the hemispheres of his brain by that point.

 

Louis. But I'm picking him because of his class and ability not because of any evidence showing how Louis would deal with someone with Ortiz's attributes.
Louis is not very proven at all against big skilled Cuban southpaws with power but

I'll still pick him because the gap in class between a top3 atg and a really solid contender should be enough to over come the size and possible style disadvantage.


It will be tough however. Louis did not have an airtight defense nor an invulnerable chin and with the height differenceo Louis can also forget about his jab being very effective.
Ortiz as a taller southpaw should just be able to swat it down and shoot his own jab over it.

 

Louis would destroy the ponderous Ortiz. It wouldn't be pretty.

Yes, I suppose that makes the fight less of a mismatch. But, Ortiz takes WAY too many breaks. When he does, Louis gets him out of there. Be it early, or late.

 

I watched the Wilder fight again last night,you're absolutely right, the Cuban would land one or two good punches then stand off.The commentator remarked on it.
