As it wasn't relevant why mention it? Monzon's record in the 70s doesn't need any additions it doesn't compare to Ali's imo but it up there in the top 5.

Ali had a better single win in foreman i give you it. But apart of foreman tell me what wins did Ali have in the 70s actually? Frazier did beat him in 1971 when was in his prime, for the rematches Frazier was finished because foreman finished him, norton? You could argue that he never did beat kenny .. You can make a case for Ali only for foreman

Yeah, you could make that case but it would be wrong. The record states he beat Norton twice and Frazier twice and he beat Foreman too. He has to get credit for those wins.

The fact that Ali struggled against Frazier and Norton was more likely a question of styles, not primes. If it wasn't, there would be no logical reason a 32 year old Ali could beat a 24 year old Foreman.

Odd you'd want to bring up the 60's and all the D's and L's Monzon had in that decade, even while fighting in his home country... Nice point to bring up.

Anyways, you still didn't address the points. Duran went 55-1 in the 70's, and avenged the only loss he had (10 round non-title fight) two separate times in dominant fashion. The two best fighters Duran faced were in their prime and in their best division. I'll ask again, are the two best fighters Monzon beat in their Prime and in their best division? Plus you failed to address the eye test and who is simply better in more areas. Do you believe Monzon looks better and is better in more areas than Duran?

Ok, I'm now convinced - you were just trolling me. Kudos - you got me. Well played, sir.

I don't like to point out spelling errors but you seem to have made a significant amount in your list at the no. 1 spot - 'Muhammad Ali' isn't spelt like that.

And both points are patently absurd.

Dude, there are nearly 50,000 threads in the classic forum and probably about 4 of those have anything to do with amateur boxing - people don't need to spell out that the threads are about pro boxing because it's a given. Why would you think it isn't? (please note this a rhetorical question and I have no interest in your answer to it).

A list of the 10 best fighters of the 1970s makes two very basic and transparently obvious assumptions:

    1. Top ten pro (not amateur) boxers
    2. 1970s=Jan 1st 1970-Dec 31st 1979

If I spelt those out at the beginning of the thread it would be wholly unnecessary and patronising so I didn't.

So, yeah, I could only figure that you must be trolling because nobody could truly be serious that they thought the basic criteria was any different.

Talk about a tough gig. A guy like Napoles did quite a bit just before the turn of the decade and missed the second half of it. Olivares got some good work done in the 60's as well and tapered off in the latter part of the 70's. Foster also did a bit in the 60's and was a great fighter stuck with a bit of a weak division. He also did nothing in the second half of the decade. Guys like Arguello, Gomez and Cervantes were extremely consistent. Cervantes had just two losses both to great fighters. Zarate, who has become underrated imo, could be argued to have had just one loss - to a great fighter while fighting above his own division. If i was rating on talent or H2H these ratings would differ quite a bit.

    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Roberto Duran
    3. Carlos Monzon
    4. Alexis Arguello
    5. Carlos Zarate
    6. Wilfredo Gomez
    7. Jose Napoles
    8. Bob Foster
    9. Antonio Cervantes
    10. Ruben Olivares
