I think it's the other way around. They're so convinced that the smaller older heavyweight champs like Marciano could compete in any era, that they tend to assume that the guys who gave them tough fights would give bigger modern heavyweights tough fights too.

That's because you're far more reasonable than most of those other guys, you evaluate film well, and you actually understand the technical principles of boxing.

    NO!

Not if we're talking about Ezzard Charles as he was in his prime. Charles was capable of beating the bigger men at 185ish pounds. I'd pick him to beat the Lyle's, Bonavena, Chuvalo's, Berbick's and Briggs of the world. Hell, id give him a reasonable shot at an upset vs say Liston, Holmes, Ali maybe Foreman. But guys like Tyson, Lewis, Bowe, Charles would be too small.

Against a 1988 Mike Tyson, see Tyson/Spinks. Now if you gave Charles the same medicine and weight training you gave Holyfield and bulked him up to a solid 210-220 pounds, while letting him keep his speed and skill with the added weight behind his punch and made his chin proportionate to his newfound size, I'd say Charles would have as much chance of beating 1988 Mike Tyson as a 185ish pound Charles would have of beating a 1960 Floyd Patterson. That is to say, a very good chance.

You know, I don't automatically discount the older, smaller heavies against the new school of heavies. It depends on the fighters in question. Thanks are more recent heavies who'd I have no problem picking Charles to beat. If we were talking about Berbick, Briggs or Molina, then yeah, I definitely can see him winning. Against prime Tyson and company, I mean anything can happen, but realistically, I don't think Charles could pull this one off. I say it's highly improbable.
