Cheers Jel. Bit of a headache to sort and a few guys ended up more towards the bottom than i would have initially thought once the outside years were culled. Cervantes might even be harshly done by.
I ended up leaving Cervantes completely out of my top 10, which is ridiculous really given what he achieved. But it’s only because the fighters of that era were so good that it could happen.
On that sort of basis i think Duran would shade him as well with both at their best. Both are top shelf ATG's tho.
H2h at their respective weights i give monzon the slight edge because i rate him 1 h2h at mw , you can argue only about hagler putting on him . i think that whitaker and mayweather beat duran at 135. Anyway These fights never happened and never will so it about opinions
I'd have SRR even at 160. Monzon would be automatic top 5. There's been a lot of great middles. I wouldn't back anyone to beat Duran at 135 tho there's a couple that may or may not turn the trick. I'd have Duran and Monzon close H2H but Duran ahead. I think Monzon might have trouble with top slicksters tho middleweight isn't historically overly stacked with them.
Ali has better wins than Duran in the 1970's over ranked opposition. Ali's heavyweight era is the best of it's division in the 1970's, Ali post Prime came out on top and fought everybody. Ali's resume over ranked contenders in that era and since then is the best thus he is the best fighter of the 1970's. Name me a win from Monzon and Duran in that decade that is better than Rumble in the Jungle? Ali at 32 Ko's a Prime All-Time-Great undefeated Foreman who destroyed two of Ali's losses in 2 rounds in Venezuela and Jamaica. How is Monzon win over undersized Napoles or aging Griffith better than Rumble in the Jungle? How is Low blow over Buchanan and not giving him a rematch or defeating Lampkin/De Jesus better than Rumble in the jungle? That lightweight and middleweight division cannot compare to the golden age of the Heavyweights when Ali took on everyone. Especially a Post - Prime Ali, robbed of his prime years and had to adapt to his lack of leg movement who constantly took on ranked contenders can be compared to lightweight Duran or Monzon? Ali best fighter of the 1970's Ali is top 3 best fighter of the 1960's along with Griffith and Eder Jofre. With D.Tiger, Harada and Ortiz in the mix.
