It's so bizarre to me that boxing fans are happy with all these divisions between 105-140lbs (weights which are outside the range of normality for most grown men) but don't want any divisions between 175-200lb i.e. normal guy size. It's such a weird alternative universe to me. I know that: (a) a good boxing physique is generally lean (b) boxers cut weight ...but still. It's weird how the whole sport is weighted (no pun intended) towards weights which no-one in normal life even weighs. I hardly know a grown man under 150lbs.
No! That's enough. There are so many divisions existing already now. There's no need to establish more divisions.
based on the poor 190lb dude's strugle, what about the HW division where the weight differences can be indeed big issues. we not gonna slice the HW into 7 divisions, are we?
I think it's a good idea, to all those saying we need less weight classes how is it fair to have lower divisions being separated by 1 or 2 lbs and a LHW has to jump 25lbs to fight pretty much full blown heavies.
It's a very black and white logic. We need less not more! When there's a huge gap in the weight classes. We can keep it the same by getting rid of one of the lower weight classes then everyone is happy.
I think it’s fine. The only growing problem is for guys that are talented 6-6’2” that don’t really have a shot against these 6’6-6’9” guys. But anyone in the former height should be able to make 200 rather easily. From LHW to CW may be a big jump, but 175 shouldn’t be that hard to maintain even as you age. Unless very tall or unusually big-boned, these guys should be able to keep cutting to 175 for the majority of their career.
No. Boxing has enough divisions. I think the sport should cut down to 12 divisions and do fight day weigh ins.
I've often thought that the LHW to CW jump was too much (I may be a bit biased though) I'm 6ft exactly and I do abit of boxing - nothing really worth talking about, but from the amount I've done I always got the impression that if I magically happened to be a pro, I'd be stuck in some sort of limbo, about 2 years back I had a fight and I managed to get down to 174 lbs (it was more out of curiosity on how I would be at that weight) and it was just too draining, I'd naturally be around the 190 mark, its a good weight for me, that would make me a CW but damn if I wouldn't be giving away alot of height/weight to the rest of the CW division, I know skills can overcome this but the saying goes a good big man will beat a good little man stands for a reason, the other option if I happened to be a pro would be to drain down to LHW - doesn't matter which option I went for I'd be sacrificing something, and there has to be a fair amount of actual pro boxers stuck in this situation, I am in agreement that we have too many divisions as it stands, but the LHW-CW jump is, in my opinion, far too big of a jump and if the consensus is not to add a new division then I think a restructure of the current weights is needed, or a removal/restructure of some of the smaller divisions so we can have the same amount of divisions as now but with a smaller gap between the LHW-CW divisions
no. I think boxing should keep the weight classes put 190 as CW. and make one belt, which is impossible because the organizations don't want to lose money.. One belt would make the quality of the fighters and champions better. Mikey Garcia 4 time champ? Back in 1985 I think he barely is a 2 time champ maybe even one time. The quality has gone down. Broner and Garcia 4 times champs? What a shame. You know how hard Arguello had to work to even get to 3 and work for the 4th?
The fighters you mention are all great fighters. The greats are great for a reason. I think the fact you had to name great fighters to make your point illustrates the difficulties involved in overcoming size deficits, the sheer amount of skill needed. Good post, though, you nailed each of the fighters.
