With retirement of Floyd and Ward we're losing an ancient art called defense.
Defensive wizardry is what really attracts a lot of fans to the sport to begin with.

A hard cap on punches per round thrown would force lesser skilled fighters to learn defense and not swing like wild drunks at a pub. Something like 9-10 punches limit is perfect, see Fury - Klitschko!

If you go over the limit you get a point deducted.

Going by the thread title alone I was going to raise hell and totally rip this idea apart but reading the arguments you’ve made...
I think it makes sense, actually. Everyone can put together beautiful combinations but only few can win the fight by throwing 10 punches per round, and landing like 4 of them.

A soft cap, hard could be too enthusiastic at this moment in time. We all know defense is the most difficult and the most beautiful part of boxing.

12 rounds of heated defensive action where 0 punches land. Hopefully someday that dream will be reality.

Ban punches completely and just have a feinting contest.

several of the current top P4P fighters have outstanding defense at no expense to their punch count- just look at Usyk. Putting a limitation like that on boxing also limits the heights it can be taken to.

Tie their hands behind their backs, the punching gets in the way of some real good Boxing. I want it to look like some sort of river dance. Knock outs are well boring.

This board is getting hilarious. Some of the threads are just pure comedy.

that is something to be done in training camp maybe. Tell the fighter throw less punches and then he learns. Doing it in a fight? Then guys like Juan Roldan would not do very well.

Couldn't agree more. No one watches boxing to see punches thrown. Besides when one fighter has maxed out his number of punches, the other fighter is free to throw punches without the fear of getting hit back. Genius!

Also a ‘penalty’ punch should be given if said fighter goes over their 10.

Hands by their sides, chin up and let the other guy lock and load on their chin.

Actually ‘free kicks’ could work as well...

Legalize holding, bear hugging, ducking below waist level etc. so fighters can use them as their main defensive strategy, and elbowing and using your head as a battering ram to slice your opponent's faces up and demoralize them, and low blows, and outlaw slipping, rolling, parrying, blocking punches, and using your footwork to avoid getting hit. And administer a minimum of a 3 year ban for any fighter who requests neutral judges or referees.
