GGG seems to be a hot topic so how would you see him going vs the best middleweight version of Toney? Personally i think Toney would put a bit of a clinic on him.
Yup toney because he does literally everything a bit better than Canelo with twice the punch output which was really the main thing that held Canelo back from winning(his poor stamina). GGG is an agressive boxer puncher. He is not and never was quite as much of a pressure fighter like Chavez Sr. He never threw that many shots. His fights vs lemieux canelo and jacobs showed that he is really a more deliberate fighter that relies on his jab. Not an animal like Chavez, Marciano, margarito or frazier that might overload a slick, in the pocket counterpuncher like toneys defense and force him into a defensive shell. Toney beats him to the punch with superior speed and reach, GGG covers up and waits until toney is finished(his big weakness is that hehjust covers up and let's his opponents finsih their combination, he doesn't rock and roll or punch WITH his opponents or counter) and then misses and gets countered over and over.
This content is protected This content is protected I rest my case. Golovkin was leagues above these two guys. Nunn put a clinic on Toney before his gas tank emptied. Yeah Toney was cute, tough and awkward. But he could be landed on and he could be outworked. Both of which Golovkin could and would do to him. Golovkin's tank is endless. Moreover, Toney could be inconsistent and lazy. None of those adjectives apply to GGG. Could Toney win? Yeah, any ATG with the right plan and on the right night can win even against an adverse stylistic matchup. But I know already the legions of fanboys are going to run in with their "Toney KO's him by the 5th OMG!!!" posts, so let me forestall that right away. I don't see either fighter getting stopped in this one.
Think GGG is very well suited stylistically for Toney. A deliberate pressure rather than extrordinary workrate, relatively slow and wide punches for a fighter of his quality. In short, a very good match for an iron jawed counter puncher like Toney.
What part of "best middleweight version" did you miss, here? Toney was better than Golovkin in every department, save maybe power. As was the case for Nunn, who Golovkin could only dream of emulating. The Nunn/Toney bout is not a useful comparison.
So your half your case rests on a fight 6 fights prior to Toney finding his footing on the world stage vs Nunn? A draw he avenged via shutout 3 months later? The Tiberi fight was indeed a poor performance but H2H dream fights pitch the best versions forward as is well known. Things don't look good when you have to cherry pick pre-prime bouts and below par efforts in order to help the cause of your favored fighter.
Sorry we were typing at the same time. Toney only found himself via the victory over Nunn. It would be very safe to say he was a more confident fighter thereafter.
LOL - No worries. I think we're quite literally on the same page, on this one. Toney served his pro apprenticeship at middleweight and looked, for the most part, pretty good in doing so. Thinking of the Nunn bout as a watershed moment for Toney is an interesting perspective. I don't think it's an unreasonable view. That said, he does have mixed performances at 160, after Nunn. But, even then, such observations only deserve remark in a discussion on ratings, perhaps. As you say, in your earlier post, head-to-head dream fights consider the best versions of the fighters in question and the best middleweight version of Toney is too good for Golovkin.
I know who is going to throw more punches and land more hard punches. Toney lost to Roy Jones ( now shame there, it wasn't close ) and Griffin. He should have lost to Tiberi, and drew with Williams ( an unknown type ) and McCallum Taking Jones out of the equation, GGG is not losing or drawing to these guys. Nunn is a big win for sure. If Nunn listed to his cover, he likely wins here. Which puncher punter with a jab did Toney beat at middle weight?
I think it's undeniable tbh. He was a massive underdog. After that win he was held in a completely different regard.
Actually, that is true. I can't remember the betting odds, but I do recall it was hardly worth placing a bet on Nunn.
