According to JDJ Kovalev basically ran the camps. He picked and choose when he wanted to run ****. Hunter could have instilled some discipline in his life. There were already talks about Kovalev being an alcoholic, I can only imagine it getting worse after the Ward losses.
He apparently found himself and a new perspective after visiting a monastery and taking a sabbatical following the Ward fights, but you can only teach an old dog so many new tricks. At that point, even buying into Virgil 100% wouldn't change that he was an old stalker who didn't have the punch resistance for that style anymore.
I think it's more stamina than punch resistance. Once it goes past the 6th his resistance is down because he's spent.
Kovs heart just wasnt in it anymore... that much is clear. I doubt any trainer could help with that at his age
It does seem that way. I have to feel sorry for JDJ now. If I remember correctly, JDJ didn't handle their breakup perfectly either, but he clearly didn't deserve the **** he got.
Definitely has some front-runner in him at this stage of the game. If I thought my guy had chin issues, I'd still be very wary of matching him with Kovalev.
No, it's not that. He stopped drinking completely. And he was disciplined in preparing for this fight.
TBH Virgil doesn't strike me as the kinda guy who allows or doesn't allow ****, he seems quite professional so if a guy doesn't take his **** serious he'd probably just walk, and that's what would end up happening with Kova. Maybe I'm wrong.
Virgil would have told Kovalev to **** off. JDJ stuck around for the paycheck. So yes JDJ's reputation deserves to take a hit.
