21 suckers. An aggressive attacking oriented fighter almost always beats the skilled counter puncher, especially if the aggressive attacking fighter throws more punches and hits harder. Toney fans need to consider how styles make fights. And factor in how inconsistent he can be. Having an off night vs GGG is not a good thing. A few examples: Archie Moore vs Harold Johnson Joe Frazier vs any boxer type without top end power Ike Ibeacuchi vs. Chris Byrd. Now please show me where a class defensive type of counter puncher who throws fewer punches and doesn't hit as hard as his opponents beats a swarming attacking type of opponents, with the caveat that both are famous / top fighters of their times.
nunn might be better than 3G but who would you want babysitting your kids.At least 3G is a clean character.
I wouldnt rate toneys and jones wins over mccallum. He was nearly 40 then. However theres no doubt an ATG like Mcallum is better than 3G, just a glance at his resume makes it obvious, its stacked with elite. 3G's resume is stacked with.. elite canelo. and its a draw. However, like i said, i amconfident 3G will add 10 ATGs to his CV soon enough. Watch and learn.
this is why we cant make these comparisons yet, Beasty. we have to compare complete careers yes. Just you wait till 3G adds his guaranteed stack of ATGS and elites to his CV like McCallum has. Then we will see who is bossman.
Perhaps those suckers and Toney fans as you call them are just regular boxing fans whose opinions aren't motivated by prejudice. A few stats you won't like but have at it anyway. - Both Canelo and Jacobs landed more power shots on Golovkin than he landed on them - Golovkin only landed around 200 punches on both Jacobs and Canelo. - Jirov threw a 1000 punches at Toney and only land 250. - Tony landed 380 punches on Jirov. How do you think Golovkin is going to connect on Tony when he was missing 500 punches on the likes of Jacobs and Canelo. Jirov missed 800 punches against Toney cos come forward guys with poor defense was his bread n butter and he was able to slip , dodge and roll off everything they threw. Toney a lot slicker and a much better defensive fighter and counter puncher than Jacobs and Canelo would have a field day exploiting GGGs slow looping shots. GGG would not go near Canelo's body for he know what the consequences would be , and he stayed outside his connect range for large swaths of the 12 rounds hiding behind a jab. When he can't drop or even come close to hurting Canelo and walks away with a draw , the argument for him beating a guy like Toney goes out the window for most sensible boxing fans.
I think Toney would win a relatively close and hard fought decision. Golovkin is a good enough boxer that he'd be able to keep up with Toney and land some of his power shots. Toney though would have the defense and chin to survive and I believe would rattle off combinations on Golovkin's head more so then Canelo was able to do.
Good post. Frazier is a fav of mine and your spot on with it. GGG might be a bit to professional for Toney doing his thing 100% of the time, while Toney is obviously imo capable of winning too, really did f up a lot of fights considering how elite he was and not doing his thing. Toney for me, is one of the greatest fighters of all time on the eye, he should've accomplished way more
160 was simply not Toney's optimal weight. He was better at higher weights. 160 is, however, Golovkin's natural weight. People seem to forget how underwhelming Toney looked at 160 compared to his higher weights. It's like they blur everything together to create some strange composite. For example, No Neck quoting the Jirov fight which took place at cruiser (!) no less. Meanwhile at 160 we have featherfist Tiberi burying Toney under a blizzard of punches. SMH.
Still a talent at 160, I agree though, your right. Its blurring him in as an exceptional talent at every weight when its not really accurate
I wouldn't bracket Golovkin in with the likes of either Frazier or Moore. Toney fits into the Boxer Puncher / Counter Puncher bracket, but to pigeon-hole him in this way would be to ignore his own peculiar style; quite unique to him. Your request is a little odd, because it's predicated on a strange definition of the boxer, who has to play the part of Toney, who in turn is not really going to be Toney clone. Toney can also throw a fair bit more leather than you seem to imply he can. That said, the first example that came to mind was Gomez taking a horrendous beating on the counter to Sanchez.
Toney was more successful at the highest level, within the middleweight division. On this basis alone, it's fair to consider this his optimum division.
A key stat for you. Golovkin has NEVER been out landed in ANY of his pro fights. This towers over any segmented example you can use, doesn't it? Yep. GGG has an all time great jab, and killer body shots. His accuracy is rather good. Also the examples you are framing happened when GGG was past his prime at middle weight. Now, can you show me style examples where the defensive counter puncher beat the more aggressive harder hitting puncher, who threw and landed more punches? Omit a KO, Toney does not have the power to stop GGG.

Right - so Golovkin is on a par with Frazier now - - - whatever. Your analogy and definitive claims about certain styles would be of great interest to bookmakers, who could suspend betting on your say so. I'm referring to the Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez bout, but there are no doubt numerous cases of Boxer Punchers, who have handled pressure fighters.
