Ali faced these 6 men after regaining his title .How would Marciano fare against the same men if they were his challengers ? Chuck Wepner Ron Lyle Joe Bugner Joe Frazier Jean Pierre Coopman Jimmy Young Does Rock have a successful 6 title defence s ? All challenges are as they were against Muhammad.
Beats Wepner, Bugner and Coopman easily; Beats Lye in a great fight, beats unmotivated Young but is 50/50 against motivated young and loses to Frazier even though Rocky is "a better fighter." 20 lbs. is 20 lbs.
It's possible, I guess, but that's a fairly high level of competition. The rock in the road imo is Frazier and to a lesser extent Lyle. Lyle has the brute power to really hurt a guy; if he got lucky early that could be all she wrote. Frazier v Marciano is what the thread is really about. I like Marciano over Frazier but there's not a hell of a lot in it and understand the reasons why somebody might pick Frazier.
Coopman gets ko'd, Wepner probably stopped late on cuts,Bugner might see the last round but loses due to his passivity,Frazier gets stopped late althoughI see the argument for the reverse. Lyle is the wild card I give Rocky a 60/40 edge ,I can't forget Ali stopped big Ron.
Yep its Lyle that's the danger man here I believe .Rock wouldn't be facing a young undefeated Frazier ,its the Manila version ,so I have to give Rocky it .Chuck as usual puts in a good effort but he'd be bleeding all over before the tenth. Bugner has a chance to see the last round ,as he's good enough to take Ali the distance. Coopman won't see past 6 .So it Boil's down to Big Ron .
I kid..... Frazier and Lyle are the most difficult one's. Frazier and Marciano....who knows. They would have had to actually fight for us to really know. This could go either way. I think Marciano stops Lyle. But Lyle doesn't go quietly. He goes kicking and screaming so Marciano will know he's been in a fight.
I think he beats Coopman and wepner. Bugner is a 50/50 fight it's close on points either way. Jimmy young if well up for it is also a 50/50. Lyle would war it with him and I think beat rock. Frazier beats him every day
I forget all about poor Jimmy .Yes, if He's up for it ,maybe in Foreman fight mode ,then He's giving Marciano a hard days night. The night he fought Ali wasn't a classic but could be if He's facing the Rock.
Strangely, I think Lyle has a better shot at stopping the rock than Frazier does. Not to say he'd win though. Fraziers team wanted no part of Lyle, high risk low reward
What this means Marciano is not meeting balding Pensioners with a million miles on the clock and most on that list I qualify as skilled Heavyweights not Light Heavies, the preferred diet Marciano feasted on......this also means prime vs prime for Marciano vs said challengers. Young will box him silly, Frazier from the FOTC will stop him on cuts and with Ron Lyle we will find out if Marciano really has a Heavyweight chin or not......I would put money on that Lyle stops Marciano........the rest he should get by but it will not be easy, once Marciano stepped up from his Tomato cans he never had a "easy" fight, he was either bleeding, getting his face re arranged, had to get up from knock downs or had to throw everything but the kitchen sink against no hopers going round after round after round.
Young at his best would likely trouble Marciano and win the first half of the fight, but Marciano with his workrate, punching power and stamina would break him down and stop him late or at least beat him up badly en route to a decision win, especially so if it's a 15 rounder. Young would have a better chance of prevailing in a 10-12 rounder.
