As a huge fan of Monzon since 1970, one thing I can say that I've never done...is maintain that he was a "good guy"..maybe he was to some close friends and relatives, but not to mankind in general.

Good writing. You make Monzon sound like a Serial Killer in a sense. I can see what your saying though.

    Thank you sir!:beer-toast1:
Truthfully, part of me thinks t he would have been just that if it weren't for boxing. I say sometimes that Monzon was the Clint Eastwood of boxing champions, but seriously, I think he'd be more of a western villain.

Great posts by you and Red. A fighter that reminded me a lot of the Great Monzon in both demeanor nd supremacy in fight was Salvador SANCHEZ

From all the reading about Carlos since he became champ, he had a volcanic temper. THAT is what made him great. he knew how bad his temper was. Towards the end of his life, he admitted, "me and my terrible temper are responsible for this", when talking about how he ended up in prison. HE was remorseful.! As I've said before Carlos Monzon and Roberto Duran r the two greatest Fighters I've ever seen in any way in my lifetime!

Yes, there were many similarities....and that's a good thing...but there was a similarity in appearance between Monzon and serial killer Richard Ramirez...and that was not so good.

Monzon had, and I'm quoting from what I've read plenty of times..."a volcanic temper"...just as you said...coupled with a "towering champion's arrogance" ....it was that cold psychopathic nature added to that temper and that arrogance that may have really done it...and his opponents may have had something to be thankful about that Carlos suffered more and more from arthritis in his hands and had to get corticosteroid injections in them. He had to modify his fighting style and take on a more methodical offensive approach.

You cannot expect fighters who pull themselves up through the sustained and all natural violence of the Latino ghettos to get to the top and then be milquetoasts. One of my favorite lines was about the savage Dempsey. People who knew him said he was the kindest man yet had a casual feeling about physical violence. Dempsey always said that hobo jungle camp brawls made him the savage fighter he became and that three rds with gloves and referreess was not real fighting. Monzon and Duran likewise. THIS casual attitude towards violence and the distance to go with the violence is what made each great. Thier very lives when young depended on it too survive. It becomes first nature. Monzon admitted his mistakes and hopefully made amends to the Lord. He wasn't performing planned violence like going into elevator s and knocking out and robbing old women. His was a reaction crime. Dead wrong, pun intended, but reactions nonetheless.

I sure like your writing Morlocks.
Monzon did instigate soccer riots before he became famous as a boxer.

The violence of the young Dempsey has always fascinated me.
