Norton was a very good boxer against real skilled opponents, but his chin wasn't very good. He gave Ali and Holmes great fights, but seriously, how can people keep a straight face while saying Norton was robbed in all three fights. A large majority of people believe Ali won the second fight and the last one was close.

Finally got around to scoring the lomachenko/salido fight
    lomachenko salido
    9 10 very close
    9 10 close
    9 10
    9 10
    10 9 close
    9 10
    9 10 close
    9 10 very close
    9 10 close
    10 9
    10 9
    10 9
    112 116
Decent fight to watch, salido is a very dirty fighter but was effective in roughing up lomachenko on the inside and landing lots of bodyshots and low blows. Felt like salidos experience was a major advantage as he knew how much he could get away with. Salido was able to use his superior inside game to win the close rounds. Felt like lomachenko was just to conservative, worried about his gas tank and this cost him as it meant salido was able to outwork him mostly. Had lomachenko upped the workrate it would have been a much easier fight as he was just landing so accurately and was able to outclass him towards the end. Could see a close points win for lomachenko but thats it.

Some additional thoughts on the fight: Ruiz is a tough mf. My first thought tbh. Ruiz is looking like a fatty who comes straight from a hot dog eating event but ffs he is good, he has an awkward style, always wondering why he is jabbing to the body most of the time instead for using his jab more to connect with the face as his jab is quite good. He also is really solid at trading at the inside, quick hands. I like his counterpunching skills, too. Great allrouner imo. His chin is also looking rocksolid, Parker stunned him a couple of times but you never had the feeling Ruiz was hurt.

Parker began relatively slow. He wasn't throwing much in the first three rounds and Ruiz was doing all the work and pressured Parker around. Parker did better in the fourth round where he started to throw more and bigger shots but not enough to take the round, it was the first close round, i scored it 10-10 but maybe another round for Ruiz.

Then Ruiz slowed down and Parker played his best card, his movement. He was moving around for the second half of the fight using his jab to outpoint Ruiz. I was surprsied both were not trading a lot at the inside. Overall a defensive fight. Nobody was hurt either in the whole fight i think.

Parker won and deserved it. But still close as there were some close rounds in the second half like round 8.

    Raheem vs Morales

I remember being real let down by this fight as I was pumped to see Morales and Pacquiao do battle again

    Raheem 1,3-6, 8-10, and 12
    Morales 2, 7, 11

Lederman and I had it 59-55 Raheem midway but we disagreed on the round though I didnt feel feel too comfy scoring the round I did and didnt necessarily agree with Lederman. I also gave 7 to Morales where Lederman did not but we did agree on 11. This fight could have been 11-1 I think 9-3 is as close as I can reasonably score it.

Jen Kin and Raul Caiz had it 116-112 and 115-113 and I just cant see what fight Caiz was watching

*Round 5 Raheem hit Morales with a bomb of a right and he staggered to the ropes probably should have been ruled a knockdown

*Round 11 Raheem was hit and his glove touched a definite missed call

*Round 6 was a slippery round where Raheem even complained to ref Shorley who said nothing I can do

*Round 7 Morales's dad after begins to complain that the ref is in their pocket and not doing anything. The HBO team wasnt having it in fact the ref was very non interventionist

    * Round 10 on they would cut to Manny's dressing room and he had this blank stare at the monitor seeing his pay day go down the tube (not knowing they would do the rematch anyway)

Morales really just looked terrible and I cant emphasize how dominant Raheem was in proportion to my memory of the fight which I had never revisited. He kicked Morales's ass in almost every round and made him miss with such ease.

It really is a shame Raheem never really got the big opportunities like say a Morales rematch or the Pacquiao fight

    Malinaggi vs Cotto

I hadnt watched this fight in a long time and never scored it and may never have seen it 12 rounds start to end. Boy I had missed out what a spirited effort by both men who showed all kinds of grit and toughness in there. The crowd got their money's worth for sure.

I concurred with 2/3 of the official judges though I dont know if my card resembles theirs round by round though I felt this was a fairly easy fight to score

I had Cotto sweep the first four and at that point was thinking how does this fight become close. Malinaggi was cut early, down early, well behind and his punches had no effect as Cotto continued to march in and start to rip combinations with both hands to the head and body

Then over the course of the next 5 rounds I had Paulie take 4 tightening it to 5-4 with the knockdown or 86-84. At this point I thought to myself how does Paulie lose this fight? At the end of round 4 I didnt like Cotto's body language he either got cocky because he was ahead or frustrated because Paulie was still there and settling in and ended the round with his hands down out of rang mimicking Paulie which was out of character and strange. He came out for 5 laid back 1 shot at a time and let Paulie jab and move and make it happen. Paulie came out in round 1 and fought like a hockey fight grab in close and punch short. Now I was super impressed with Paulie inside he was able to push and wrestle the very strong Cotto around. He also would make Cotto pay when he did his lapses cotto would back off for a breather and Malinaggi would dive in with a left hook, never hurt Cotto but was scoring. Several rounds I think notably the 8th started with brutal exchanges with both trying to prove a point. The other thing Cotto did that I couldnt tell if it was frustration or trying to turn the momentum that he had lost was turn southpaw. I mean he didnt do it a lot but it definitely didnt work for him

So I sat on my couch with the fight hanging in the balance of the last 3. If Paulie could win all 3 he wins 114-113, if he loses 1 round he loses the fight on my card. Cotto dug deep and pulled it out. His corner never seemed overly concerned and he never seemed hurt and didnt bruise at all but this fight was close up til this point. Round 10 I was iffy on but I gave Cotto a clean sweep of the final 3 rounds sealing the fight.

Paulie, I know lots of posters dont like him for whatever reasons: haircut, Pacquiao steroid accusations, McGregor drama whatever etc. He showed all kinds of balls in this fight and I'd say your not a boxing fan if you cant tip your cap to Paulie in this one. He adjusted like a veteran in there, came out very aggressive, was cut early and was down early but stayed composed and though he took facial damage he stayed the course. He man handled Cotto at times and showed great craft

Cotto, I've never been a fan of his my post history probably shows it. (not a hater) He dug this one out, I dont think anyone expected Paulie to be so tough, his boxing ability seemed to be at least respected though still somewhat unproven but I dont think anyone quite expected the heart and courage he showed. Cotto got hit plenty though he never appeared hurt though he staggered one time seemingly from balance he looked tired and sluggish in the middle rounds. He had to find his reserves to get over the hump and close the show. He closed the show like a champion and thats why he won.

    Spinks vs Holmes II

Never saw this all the way through or scored it but I know this was seen as controversial. I will say this was an interesting fight, not a war or a barn burner but a great clash of young vs old, big vs small, and some great skills. A very patient fight at times that would burst into fierce exchanges.

I had Larry win the first 5 with 5 being close Lederman scored identical but Merchant did give 5 to Spinks

I had it 6-4 Spinks after dropping the first 5 so I had him lose 9-6 or 144-141

    Holmes 1-5 then 9, 12, 14, 15
    Spinks 6,7,8,10, 11, and 13

Lederman and I disagreed on 7 and 15 but got to the same 144-141 card which agreed with 1 judge the other 2 had it 144-141 and 144-142 Spinks

Spinks had a great jab in round 8

I felt 9 was pretty close

Round 10 was a round where Holmes spent the majority in reverse despite being the aggressor practically all fight to that point

12 I saw as close both seemed to land a similar amount of blows but Holmes hit much harder and his corner pretty much told him he needed to win out to get the decision

14 I felt Spinks pretty much dominated 14 before getting nailed by a Holmes right bending down and nearly having his glove touch. He got hit by some follow up but Larry let him off the hook. Spinks turned away looking at the crowd and Larry stood there prompting Sugar Ray Leonard to get angry and start yelling in disbelief that he should be jumping on Spinks. This happened a few times.

Round 15 they really just went all out what a great round. At the end Leon and Michael had a nice moment hugging and you could read Leons lips say I love you and Jersey Joe Walcott was in the shot during the post fight interview looking good for his age.

I hate just tossing the word robbery around but I mean Lederman and I had it by 3 points and Merchant had it to Holmes too. I know I said 3 rounds or so were close plus some disagreement rounds but it just seemed Larry won the first 5 which is a hard mountain to overcome. He never seemed to hurt Larry but his left hook was terrific and his jab found its home in the middle rounds. Larry hurt Spinks several times but could never get in the finishing blows, that said Spinks was good at masking how hurt he was and springing into desperation mode when stunned and getting Larry to back off

    Malinaggi vs Cano

    Malinaggi: 1,2,,7,10
    Cano 3-6, 8,9, 11 and 12 with 11 being 10-8 on a knockdown

116-111, real scores 118-109 for Cano and 2 114-113 for Paulie

I thought Cano won, could see it being a little closer but I dont think Paulie won 8 rounds

Funny they said Paulie complained about Smoger coming in because of his Cotto fight (I just watched) and in reality Smoger let Paulie clinch and rough house in that fight so I dont understand his complaints of allowing Cotto to roughhouse him

    Juarez vs Raheem

    Juarez 3-6, 8-10
    Raheem 1,2, 7, 11, and 12

    7-5 Juarez with 2 10-8 rounds and a 10-7

115-109 which matched 1 judge the other 2 were 116-111 or 114-110. Didnt feel great about my card been drinking heavily and was on the phone throughout much of the fight

seemed like a decent fight. Always felt Juarez squandered his career always felt he was a very good 126lb fighter but chased the names at 130. Felt he could have won a title at 126 but every time he was in contention moved up

really was impressed with soto's big upset

Loved that fight and for what’s its worth I agree with a draw at the least, bit of a shock as Lebedev looked hurt early on.

Raheem vs Freitas WBO Lightweight Title

I watched this live on Boxing After Dark and thought it was an ugly boring fight where I felt Raheem did enough to carry the day but wanted Freitas to win so I didnt care much at the time. Never thought to revisit it but through watching Raheem fights lately I was curious to give this another go.

At the end of the fight I had it 115-113 to Raheem but he would lose on the cards to Freitas

    I had Raheem taking 1,5,6,7,8,10 and 12
    I had Freitas taking 2,3,4,9 and 11

Glen McCrory the TV scorer had the same score except he had 1 and 12 even so he had it 115-115 a draw but who scores 2 even rounds anymore

I did rewatch 12 after having a difficult time picking a winner the first go through. The second time was still tough but it seemed to me that Raheem landed a little bit more despite both being very ineffective and just kind of colliding into each other 2 close to land anything very effective but Raheem ducked under the head shots of Freitas and got in some small blows of his own.

I was happy to see the broadcast display the full cards of the judges and what I saw shocked me. Sanmartino had the same score as me but we differed on 5 rounds. Weisfeld had the same score just the other way and we only differed on 4 rounds and Feldman had it 116-112 and we differed on 5 rounds. Weisfeld and Sanmartino gave the 12th to Raheem as I did but Feldman went for Freitas

The rounds where myself the 3 judges and McCrory scored the same are as followed:

    Freitas: 2, 4, and 11
    Raheem: 10

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I guess they were swayed by Freitas's power. I cant really be too upset with the official cards I mean 115-113 is close and 1 and 12 were tight rounds which is enough to swing to 115-113 the other way if scored the opposite direction

    Notes:

Round 1: nasty head butt seemed to really **** off Freitas
Round 2: Lots of wrestling both just fall into eachother some head clashes which seem to annoy Freitas more
Round 6: Raheem throws Freitas to the canvas
Round 10: Commentary team talks about Freitas's camp wanting Barrera or Pacquaio super fights

I think seeing how well Juarez did vs Barrera its not outside the realm of possibility for Freitas to beat the Barrera of that time

I do not think he would pose much of a threat to Pacquiao

Man I thought this thread would be like flies to ****, every poster on here even the shitty ones always argue about having scorecards and screaming robbery or whatever

    Arguello vs Escalera I

at the time of the TKO in the 13th I had Arguello well in front 116-111 8-4 with 1 knockdown

    Arguello winning 2, 4-8, 10 and 11
    Escalera winning 1, 3, 9 and 12

Escalera looked to have slipped in round 2 the ref kind of counted but it was hard to tell the commentary didnt catch it until between rounds when cosell asked mercante why he ruled it a slip and mercante said no i scored it a knockdown

escalera was warned 5 or even 6 times for throwing back hands. he lost no points, not sure if it was due to the crazy puerto rican crowd or him seeing them as accidental and not causing any harmful damage. still a point maybe even 2 should have been docked

notes: escalera was cut on both eyes and his mouth the fight seemed to have been stopped on a cut to the mouth. they didnt zoom in to the blood or anything it was tough to see if it was really that bad. must have been if they called it in the guys backyard. arguello got cut late and was rocked by a right hand in the 12th while way ahead.

saw on wiki that this was rings 67th ranked in its top 100 for best fights. i didnt see that honestly. seemed kind of a run of the mill high level title fight. highly skilled but arguello was extremely dominant for long stretches and the finish was a cut not KO. There wasnt much back and forth and the only guy who ever seemed ready to go was Escalera at times when he got nailed and once for a moment Arguello in round 12. to me there wasnt enough momentum swings, knockdowns, staggerings, or close scorecards for me to be on the edge of my seat

    final 2 thoughts

1- I love the old commentary with 1 guy. Howard Cosell is by no means my favorite but you dont have so much filler bull **** where it turns into 3 guys talking over each other and having conversations completely irrelevant to the fight.

2-Escalera was making his 10th defense of the title, I didnt realize how long he reigned there in an era with less titles and 15 round fights thats pretty impressive. I know Mayweather is often anointed as the greatest 130lber of all time and I think Arguello would give him a hell of a fight and its interesting you dont see much talk of Escaleras rank overall considering he stayed champ a good while. 130 seems to be a good pass thru weight for many greats like Mayweather, Oscar, Manny, Barrera, Morales and even to a less extent other guys who got a start there like say a Broner,

Same here.:ohno Not sure when you literally create a space for people to do what they do on here anyway, they avoid it like the plague. It happens all the time, hence the Mayweather-Pacquaio Receptacle that's been avoided since IB started it.
