Cooney was in a different league to Grant, plus Grant had no chin.

Considering their performances against the best fighters they faced, you'd have to back Cooney. Grant boasts more than enough firepower to decapitate his counterpart, but Gerry is the more sensible bet all things considered.

I voted Cooney, but Grant would be live.

Going into the Lewis and Cooney fights, there wasn't much separating them other than Grant almost being knocked out by Golota, but Grant also proved he could come back to win in that fight which is something Cooney never did.

    I still pick Cooney though.

not so much that grant won but that golota was a head case. golota had bounced grant off the mat four times and was miles ahead on the cards. got knocked down in the 11th, gets up immediately and tells the ref he quits.

interesting fight. cooney by unanimous. would have a hard time getting inside due to grant's reach and size. once there though, cooney would tenderize those ribs, liver and kidneys!

It was the 10th...go watch the round. He lost his legs from a right hand and had almost half of the round left when he packed it in. He was done. Grant was also competitive and started winning rounds earlier in the fight. Cooney wasn't great at recovering from a big shot as seen in the Spinks fight.

thanks, it was the 10th. been a long time since i have seen it. just remember golota quitting when he was miles ahead.
agree with assessment on cooney. i liked grant and wanted him to reach the top. just think in that battle, cooney's infighting would prevail. both had average chins, so it could be a toss up!
    peace!

Cooney was a quick starter, unlike Grant, who always started slowly. Cooney most likely would've KO'd Grant early, Grant has his chances late if he survives till the late rounds.

I've got Cooney taking this ,in a similar fashion as Lennox. Coming in fast and hurting Grant quickly. Cooney W ko 2

This shouldn't even be a question, really.

    Cooney destroys Grant.

Cooney hit like a truck, and was a very fast starter.

Grant was a slow starter, and vulnerable to left hooks (and right hands for that matter).

Cooney connected early against nearly everyone he fought. Grant got hit early by most of the quality guys he fought.

The odds aren't really in Grant's favour. He had size, stamina and a big heart, but ultimately we've seen throughout his career what happens when he gets hit flush, and the chances are that Cooney would do that to him, and do it early.

That's about it. I'd favor Gerry in this one.
