It always amazed me Joe got back into the ring with George Foreman. Even if he hadn't finished his career in Manilla he had zero chance of winning. Poor management to let him try.
Great points Reinhardt, Just as Angelo Dundee would send an impaired Jimmy Ellis against "Smokin Joe" in 1975! They're were $75,000 reasons for Jimmy Ellis! Thats probably the biggest $check Frazier could muster at the time (Foreman bout), and his enormous pride! "Smokin Joe Frazier" had won his World Title, and took his licks, and whats wrong with 32-3 and w /27 Knockouts? Frazier vs Quarry 6/17/74 I knew Quarry was going to be in trouble for Joe sent "Scrap Iron" Johnson & Jimmy Young to a Philadelphia hospital , in the same ambulance! (2 weeks before the bout). Another fite that Quarry in contention for a Title shot needed like an Eskimo needs ICE!
So I was thinking, "Wasn't Jimmy Ellis #2 for the first Frazier fight? After all, he was the WBA champ when that sort of meant something." But a quick look back shows that Ring docked Ellis for inactivity and gave Leotis Martin the #2 spot after his kayo of Liston.
Joe said he got a million dollars for the fight. They were cashing him out. With all his health issues it's a wonder he was able to get licensed. I think Frazier also wanted to redeem himself by giving Foreman a tougher battle. Eddie's game plan was sound but Foreman was just a terror on shorter crouching type fighters.
Ring : NEVER EVEN RANKED JIMMY ELLIS THE NUMBER # 1 CONTENDER. Yes third ranked behind Leotis, and Frazier, Ali. And his inactivity was not all Jimmy's fault, Bobby Cleroux, Gregorio Peralta, and Henry Cooper were all scheduled for a WBA shot at Ellis. Politics-BBC, Argentina did not come up with the doe $ and detained Ellis and Dundee at an Buenos Aires airport, And Cleroux lost a split ten round hometown decision in a tuneup to veteran Billy Joiner! IT WOULD BE HARD FOR ME TO GO OUTSIDE RATHER THAN TAKE A TUNEUP, WHEN I'M SIGNED FOR A SHOT!
I used to work out at Fraziers in the early 90's and I liked to ask questions after training and word in the gym was that Jimmy never gave Joe any problems. Jimmy just couldn't keep Joe off him is what I was told.
I agree but I had the feeling that Joe just had to know if he could or could not beat the man...I think after the 2nd fight he was 90 percent sure he was never going to....it's the heart of a champion the belief in his own ability and facing his limit
The defensive plan was pretty sound but, Frazier's biggest problem in the foreman rematch was his complete lack of a straight punching arsenal and lack of nonlinear footmovement. Frazier was just a complete offensive workhorse. He wasn't built to fight anyway other than forward. Foreman was wide open for shots down the middle but with his pawing mummy defense, hooks had to get around his huge arms first. Plus you had to be close to hit him with a hook anyway. I don't think Frazier could have ever beaten him. Slow starter vs incredibly fast starter Big puncher vs bigger puncher 1 hand vs 2 hands etc etc.
that may have been what they told you but I find that hard to believe after actual fights with Norton, Ali, Foreman, Lyle, and Shavers, all of who I think Jimmy got the better of
