    Info from ring magazine 1996:
    Quality of opposition: 8
Bouts vs Top 50 fighters: 4
Why he`s here: 20 successful defenses
What he could have done to better his ranking: Beaten Muhammad Ali five years earlier than he did.
Who would have won between Ali from 75-76 and Holmes in `81?

Hilarious that Ali is at the forefront of what he could have done better. Certainly exposes a bit of bias. How about unifying the division?

Because Ali five years before Holmes beat him was better than the other champs Larry would of had to beat to unify the title and he would have been around 26 so it would have proved he was also better than George Foreman.

Every point you made is opinion, not fact. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with any of it and I understand how that could have effected his ranking, but do you not find it moronic that they centralised what Holmes could have done better around Ali rather than what actually held him back from being ranked higher. You could have said the same about him beating Tyson or Holyfield, but I guess it's pretty evident that Holmes was always going to be left in Ali's shadow, which shouldn't be the way.

So, 17th best fighter P4P in the last 50 years, from an article 22 years ago?

I'm sure he's probably dropped down a few notches and some fighters who have come along in the past 22 years have moved ahead of him.

Nearly a quarter of a century is a long time.

That would have to take a further look into as you'd be losing every viable contender on the list from 1936-1958.

It didn't go back to 1936 even then. 1996-50=1946

    1968 to 2018.

Holy crap, maths was genuinely one of my stronger subjects in school. That's just embarrassing

Dude I have that magazine. Can't believe it's been 22 years!

I think Sugar Ray Robinson was rated #1. What would've made him better: If he would've walked on water. That was Ring's answer.

I think I have it, too.

That said, I don't think Holmes makes the top 17 P4P from 1968 to 2018.

Holmes is still respected by some as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and there haven`t been many fighters in 22 years since `96 that I would put in the Top 20 fighters in the last 50 years.

I don't even know if he makes the top 5 heavyweights from 1968 to 2018. Maybe just slides in.

There have also been a lot more fighters who were champs in multiple weight divisions over the last 22 years than there ever were before that.

(Because of moving the weigh-ins back a day in the late 80s and the addition of title belts.)

But Holmes would have been 25-26 if he fought Ali just after he beat Foreman, he was 38 when he fought Tyson and around 42 when he fought Holyfield it wouldn`t be realistic to assume he would have a chance with those younger fighters his era and prime had past.

Maybe but AJ ranked Holmes as the third best heavy of all time.

I don't care what Anthony Joshua thinks. (LOL)
