I would agree with this...I answered "yes" but I think you raise a fair point in terms of what does ATG even mean, what is the criteria, etc. It's all relative.
Yes. and it hurts me to say it, because he had/has probably the ugliest style of any prime HOFer in history. Atleast Hopkins could use both hands and was quite vicious and entertaining before he got to the wrong side of 35, and when he got old and he cheated or fought dirty it was funny. Ward, even in his prime was mostly onehanded and wrestled and grabbed for 85% of the round. He's the only fighter I've seen who's had fights which stank so bad that I stopped watching. Why did he have to throw body punches while wrestling, holding one arm and rubbing up to his opponent? What's wrong with throwing beautiful, vicious bodyshots like Cotto or Tyson? Why do you have to hold one arm and rub up against him like a housecat trying to spread her scent? .....but yeah at this point with his resumee(and yes the second Kovalev win was more or less legit, Kovalev was folding up way before any low blows) He's gotta be an ATG. Nowhere near his idol RJJ though
Except he didn't beat Canelo. A small and faded PBF showed you how to tool Canelo a much bigger GGG who was supposed to destroy him went life and death with him and drew.
Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by ATG. Ward was undoubtedly one of the greatest talents of the last 9 years, if not arguably THE greatest talent in the last 9 years. So that's a definitive YES for me. Ward is indeed an ATG.
I was not involved in this thread and was just browsing but at SMW Ward didnt appear interested in Bute or Degale and didnt face Andre Dirrell, all boxer movers. At SMW he didnt face one top prime undefeated SMW, he beat Kessler, who beat Froch, who beat Bute but didnt face any when undefeated or prime. That isnt a slur as he did well and had a decent career. I think Ward will be a HOFer at some point
I admit to being a big fan of Floyd so maybe a bit bias but that is a win that although at a catchweight, Floyd did show how good he is. I can never get my head around alot of the criticism Floyd gets, he fought so many top fighters
I've seen some suggest it's if one is in the Top 100. But if someone is at 100, and along comes a special talent who eventually moves #100 out, are they no longer an ATG? Need some type of criteria. Otherwise, ATG is as meaningless as P4P.
Ward not only would have beaten Golovkin, but he would have made it look easy. He's bigger, stronger and faster than Golovkin. As it is, Ward is a top 10 ATG at SMW.
No. That term should be used very sparingly, for the Alis, Robinsons and Louis's, and only after a period of time has elapsed to make a clear assessment. I would say, for example that there are probably 20 or less fighters in the history of boxing to whom this label should be properly attached. Is Ward a Hall of Famer? No question. ATG? I think not.
The man was universally recognized as the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world when he retired. Was what Joe's highest ranking again?
Why are you once again talking about Calzaghe on a Ward thread? You seem very insecure on the subject. Oh just to help you out... You are aware that P4P is a mythical thing arent you and only an opinion. Thought you may need to know!
Canelo weighed 1 pound less than he did in his previous fight stop it. PBF was also old and fighting in his 5th weight class a weight he has never looked good at I might add but you love to leave that kind of stuff out. Even still he damn near shut out a guy who GGG struggled with and drew with. It's no secret that PBF is 100000000 times the boxer GGG is. Hell GGG couldn't even move up 1 weight class to fight light punching Ward let that sink in.
This content is protected I still think that win Vs Creed is probably his best and most conclusive win ever. ATG for sure.
