What was the most gruesome injury suffered by a fighter during a bout?

beat me to many of these. i would add kevin kelley's eye. looked like some one had inserted a softball under each eyelid.

 

G’day Red, I vaguely remember seeing pics of Willie Pep suffering a severe eye injury in one of his fights with Sandy Saddler.

It was pretty hard core.

Funnily enough Saddler retired due to eye damage himself.

What's that brutal Arguello bout where his opponent had something like three or more separate, bad cuts on his face, and Arguello himself had a bad cut or two that actually required cosmetic surgery? Was it Escalera?

 

Not a fight or even related to boxing but I saw an attempted "social experiment" prank where a man knocked out the jokester with a solid right hand. When the jokester woke up the cheek, where the punch landed, had been torn up and you could see the teeth and some of the gum line. And there was blood. Even after seeing things like the Rahman head clash and a few ear fights the image of that mangled cheek stuck to me.

 

Daniel Zaragoxa's face was pretty (let me finish) gruesome in the ... erm .. in the ... erm in every single fight he had.

 

Yes it was, Russ. He fell into the ringpost after a left hook and left a huge smear of blood. Nasty.

And then add in he's fighting a Ray Robinson with that kind of handicap. Just how many guys are going to be able to deal with a normal opponent with that kind of thing? Lots of front runners in the sport and lots of guys totally unaccustomed to having to deal with anything like that.
