Was Angelo Dundee overrated as a boxing trainer?

I feel this vid shows how much D`Amato knew compared to Dundee, Cus noticed how many punches Ali was taking in sparring after his 3 year lay-off but Dundee didn`t thin k it was a big deal and had no answer for Ali taking these shots, D`Amota knew far more about defense for me.

 

actually, I thiink Dundee was as good or better

certainly better than overrated Ray Arcel and even Manny Steward

but not quite as good as Lou Duva, the greatest trainer of our lifetime

 

Duva wasn`t the main trainer in his fighter`s corner George Benton was and he was an amazing boxer also.

I haven`t seen any studies on youtube of Dundee training defense.

 

It is customary in boxing for trainers to take their methods to their graves. Don't know why.

 

Dundee was an awesome cornerman . He would be #1 in that category.

 

Agreed - Dundee came into his own at fight time. Gil Clancy was another one like that. They both seemed to knew just what to say to their fighters in the corner.

 

I don't think he wasbetter than Steward. They are all good. I think Steward was more a tactics expert than Dundee. Dundee was more of a inspiring guy like Duva.

 

Dundee was exceptional in teaching footwork. Look at Ali. Willie Pastrano. Ralph Dupas. Not to mention SR Leonard.

He trained Carmen Basillio, Luis Rodriguez and even took Jimmy Ellis — a middleweight — to a heavyweight title.

As noted, he was a great cornerman. He could punch the right buttons at the right time.

Post Ali and SRL, he mostly came in for part of a camp as a ‘finisher’ to work with champs and contenders in the final week or few weeks before a fight and then worked the corner, but look at the fighters he produced (in my first two graphs) who weren’t as famous with whom he worked from early in their careers and see what he did with them. That tells the whole story.

 

yes theyre all good but I think Angelo was the one who devised strategy vs Hearns to move and circle, taking the impact off Tommy's right hand early, the come on later to test Tommy's strength and endurance

of course, you may note that Leonard was also the superior conditioned athlete and evidently stronger

Dundee was first rate and look what he did with hot and cold club fighter David Love

He was also perceptive of other fighter's weaknesses or decline, noting that Foreman wasnt the same fighter in the Norton fight as he was in the Frazier fight. Foreman later said he had problems that same day with his leg

 

Ah, David Love, good call ... kind of a gatekeeper/journeyman out of San Diego who had a nice run over Philly middleweights. I think he beat Willie Monroe, Boogaloo Watts and Bennie Brisco before a young Curtis Parker finally got a win for Philadelphia.

 

Cus was a technical genius and could craft a guy from the ground up. Dundee was a master psychologist knew what buttons to press to get the best out of already great talents. Which matters more is an individual opinion.

 

Duva was often a liability in the corner he was no tactician just a motivator who often went over the top.Benton did the strategy.I think Dundee was a good cornerman good at using psychology but not a great trainer.

 

He was in Basilio's coner for a few fights,I wouldn't say he was the trainer.
