if 3g had not been ducked, he'd have martinez, sturm, ward, froch.

as it stands he still has lemmy jacobs geale and brook as his best 4.

I actually wanted to stay under heavyweight. Beating Walcott at heavy is certainly some achievement.

Please find me a source that says that going into his first fight with Saddler. Something saying he was far past his best days.

Eye Witness who saw Pep pre and post plane crash live at ringside said Pep looked faster, sharper reflexes per plane crash

Makes sense....surviving a plane crash with a broken back in which people perished...nearly impossible to make a full physical recovery from that

So where are the accounts AT THE TIME ... in the build-up to the fight ... saying he just wasn’t the same?

Ric Flair, the wrestler, had a very similar accident and obviously competed for decades after at the highest level. Look at what Pep did after the crash ... long winning streak, didn’t miss a beat.

He won 27 fights in a row post-crash before Saddler. Not one commission said he wasn’t fit to fight. He won the world featherweight title (as opposed to the NYSAC which he previously held) after the crash. He won 18 more in a row after losing to Saddler ... before losing to him again. He fought for nearly TWENTY more years after the crash. He won more than 100 more fights with only seven more losses to anyone not named Sandy Saddler.

Was he less sharp, still hobbled, in his first fights back? Sure, of course. But was Saddler favored over this beaten-up, well-past-it, shell of a man? Did the lead-up talk about how Pep was a broken man in his workouts?

People couldn’t accept that Saddler was better. Yet he proved it winning 3 out of 4 and showed himself to be the better fighter. Period.

If Pep went on a losing streak after the crash, or just scraped by, OK ... show me those accounts. If after losing 3 of 4 to Saddler he was shown to just be a past-sell-by guy picking up paydays by using his name to put over younger fighters, OK. But that wasn’t the case. Saddler was a class above.

EDIT: Here’s a link to a contemporary account of Pep beating Jock Leslie for the world title, post-crash and pre-Saddler. Show me the part where it says he’s just not the same:

Saddler a class above? Thanks for the laugh....he lost to Pep, lost to three men whom Pep defeated, had some bad defeats in his prime, and was behind on scorecards in third and 4th fights so he started committing fouls to injure Pep.

Besides you. Everyone on this forum rates peps career as better

Pep was equally dirty in their fights. The film we have and the accounts confirm it.

So you’re saying Pep was an all-time great so him winning one fight against Saddler out of four proves Sandy wasn’t good. LOL.

Look at how many of Saddler’s losses were fighting up in weight class — he was nearly undefeated at 127.

I don’t care what others on this forum think. Differing opinions are allowed. Saddler won 3 of 4 head to head. A lot of people at the time had trouble accepting that so up came the retroactive excuse ... must have been the plane crash that mysteriously affected Pep ONLY when he fought Saddler.

Pep was great. Saddler was greater.

An opinion shared only by you

Pep is a consensus top 10 p4p all time great and top 1-2 featherweight of all time. Saddler had too many inconsistencies and bad losses..no one rates saddler in the top 10 p4p all time.

    Pep was greater

Saddler’s three best wins are better than Pep’s.

Saddler’s ‘inconsistencies’ are about like counting losing to Sammy Angott against Pep ... almost all of them are above 127.

    My piece on Ray Leonard.

Ray Leonard is you ask me is one of the top 5 best boxers of all time. In his prime he was incredible, on his come up he was in a good era for welterweights and faced very solid opposition and clowned them being impressive in pretty much all his fights. Beat Benitez a very good champion and soon after fought a classic against Duran who was on top of his game at the time. Leonard went to war with Duran when he really didn't have too a fought his fight and fought pretty well even with him losing a close decision. Like a true great came back and this next time fought and a smart fight and dominated Duran making him quit. After that he looked pretty well unstoppable as champion and defeated who I believe was probably the next best welterweight of all time Hearns.. Took the 154 title for Kalule with ease who was a solid champion. Truly I feel Leonard was the best fighter between 147-154 I'd take him any day against the likes of Mayweather, De La Hoya, Trinidad and if he faced Terry Norris when he was young he'd have beat him too.

He retired for years only to make an epic comeback and beat Marvin Hagler ending his great reign at middleweight in a classic fight that is still debated. My opinion is the fight was just about even in fact I score it 6 rounds a piece but if I had to pick a winner I'd say Leonard over all deserved it. He then would capture a light heavyweight strap have one more good fight with Hearns and beat Duran for a 3rd time. He looked nothing near his prime self in his comeback but still put together some great performances. Unfortunately it didn't last long and he ended his career with two bad losses.

His career wasn't the longest but in it he showed exactly what it takes to be great. He had the skill, the toughness and the heart. I truly consider him the best of the fab 4 hes the only one who beat all of them, the best of his time, the best welterweight and one of the greater fighters of all time. I find people like to credit all the old time fighters on there top P4P list and some are very good but when you watch them fight few of them brought what Leonard brought to the table. In his prime no welterweight comes to mind who I'd favor over him, he had three of the greatest fights of his time and was never beat decisively until he was over the hill.

He was very worthy of taking over the "Sugar" nickname from Ray Robinson and they would've had an excellent fight.
