Do you think his back problems played a role in a guy like Cockell lasting 10 rounds? That was 55 i believe.

No, I think a few factors played into Cockell lasting so long with Marciano.

    1. Cockell fought with a lot of pride and heart. He promised his countryman he would give his best effort, and he DID. He knew they were watching, and he was willing to go through hell to try to win the fight. Sometimes inspired people can overachieve. Cockell did that night

    2. Marciano did not take Cockell seriously. He discussed it in his book. "I am having a hard time getting up for this guy. Everyone knows I'm going to kill him."

    3. Marciano's volume punching style changed allowed Cockell to stick around longer. I think had Marciano adopted his older style of wild slugging/loading up the big Suzy Q...he might have taken Cockell out early.

Whatever..marciano dominated him winning 8 out of 9 rounds and knocked him down 4 times. Yeah, Marciano looked sloppy and downright crude at times vs Cockell. But that was Marciano. Sometimes he fought down to the level of his opposition, but most importantly he fought up to the level of his competition. The better the competition got, the more Marciano rised to the occasion. Some of Marciano's worst fights were in providence fighting ham n eggers where Rocky fought down to his opponents and looked reckless and crude. Sam Silverman confirmed this

You literally just verified everything I said thank you. A chip is still a break and he needed surgery on his forearms to remove the broken blood vessels after.

This is all known to me.

My conclusion is that they were both exceptionally hard punchers.
Not off the top of my head.

We can go over the pathological evidence of Marciano related injuries if you want, but I think that it will only lead us to the conclusion that he was an exceptional puncher.

I guess that you respect Cockell a lot more than LaStarza.

He took him seriously enough to insist on a postage stamp sized ring!

No I just like statements to be verified. I always strive to do so myself and require the same from others, otherwise they are just throwaway remarks like pissing in the wind.

You wont provide **** all as proof to back up your statements we both know that don't we!

Well, I think Cockell could have been a very good middleweight/Light-Heavyweight. He was not a heavyweight. His unfortunate medical condition caused him to gain weight. He physically couldn't do anything to stop the weight gain. So he had to fight at heavyweight. It wasn't a good division for him. He was too short, his arms were too short, and he didn't have a hard enough punch or take a good enough punch. At 160/175 without his medical condition? He would have competed at a world class level. But compared to the better heavyweight contenders of the 50s, Cockell does not belong on that list.

I think Lastarza at his best was a better heavyweight than Cockell, but he gets overrated by many Marciano fans. Lastarza had a good high guard and elegant skills, but he wasn't tall enough or had a long enough reach, he wasn't very athletic, didn't punch hard enough, he didn't move his feet anywhere near enough, and his chin was highly questionable vs good punchers. Obviously, he was extremely well managed and protected by Jimmy Deangelo.

I don't rate cockell at all at heavyweight. He didn't deserve the title shot over Nino Valdes, but I will give him credit he fought very valiantly against Marciano, he showed a lot of heart. Cockell was just so physically limited on what he could do.

And no Marciano wasn’t the strongest puncher ever. Round one of a fight Foreman Tyson Klitschkos Lewis hit harder but I’d wager come round 10 rocky hit harder then most of them.

    What was
Cockell's view of Marciano? Did he offer an opinion of him as a fighter overall?

His conditioning was perhaps his strongest asset. Allowing him to carry his punch late. An often overlooked factor when judging power hitters.

He said he was never the same after facing him ,he didnt complain about the many fouls and never suggested he would have won without them. He said Rocky threw heavy shots with full power non stop ,he just could keep it up He had a great deal of respect for Rocky.Don was a very nice guy, a real gentleman similar to Rocky really.
