Yeah, there are some insane things said about Rocky here. There were a thread a while ago who praised him as some fantastic technician and there have been others where Wilder's success somehow shows that Rocky would dominate today's era as well. The Rock really makes some go off their rocker. ;)

I wouldn't rule out Rocky's chances of winning a belt at cruiser...

No it wasn't rhetorical and you may well be right. Especially the skin color skin really seem to get people going, in both directions. Perhaps it's a cultural war thing.

Unfortunately this is all too true.

He was the last white American champion, the only one with any longevity not compromised by the color bar, and he just happened to be the only unbeaten heavyweight champion.

Everything that he did in the ring was essentially perfect, but everything that he was on paper points to him being beatable.

You couldn't invent a fighter more likely to polarize, given a blank sheet of paper!

The top comment on my almost 2 Million view Marciano video is from a black youtuber.

    It reads:

"This guy was a beast in the ring... I don’t care what color he was... "

It's the most liked comment on my video last I checked.

It says a lot about the consciousness around Marcianos legacy.

It's more or less the same on this forum, I think. Most of us recognize Rocky for cleaning out for a 3-4 year period, being the best of that time, and don't feel any urgent need to say much more on the subject. But then there are a handful who are obsessed about whether he would do well today or not. Not many, but they make a lot of noise (and threads).

Yes he was, a great fighter, great champ and a fine man,but he wasn't Superman and Hercules rolled into one as some of his fans portray him.

The squeaky wheel gets the most oil on this issue.

As you say, the more level headed people accept that he took care of business in his era, and don't feel the need to make an issue of it one way or the other.

Unfortunately, the people who obsessively make threads about him, tend to dictate the terms of the debate!

They force the more level headed people to pick a side!

I think sometimes in the heat of a discussion/debate/argument you have people who are trying to "win" the argument. Getting to the truth becomes secondary. Then ofcourse keep posting relentlessly. Often the truth ends up looking like Jersey Joe in rd. 13

    Maybe their 'Attrition Poster's LOL.

Sounds like your exaggerating again Susan.

I said Don was as Qualified as anyone was who fought for the title. Not the most. He was world number two. Legitimately world number two. And that seems to be rather a thorn in your behind dosnt it?

Think of everyone who challenged for the title who wasn’t world number two? This is most of them. Dons credentials were legitimately better on that basis weren’t they?

So my statement is solid. It stands up. Right up until somebody wants to reword what I said.

I made my point that Valdes deserved the title shot over cokkell because he was the better fighter and higher rated heavyweight, This seems to be a thorn in your side.

I don’t think you like it that Valdes was 6’3 80” reach with a big punch, the type of world class fighter Marciano never fought in his career. Cockell, with his short arms and weak punch, Marciano fought plenty of men like him. Cockell was a slow plodder made to order for Marciano. Valdes had the tools to open up marcianos nose.

When people start claiming that Marciano's fists were radioactive I must question how the rudder on their ship is set.

Again, we have people claiming that Marciano's fists caused tumors. Let that sink in.

What I find funny is that the people who constantly make these fanboy accusations are often the biggest fanboys themselves. They can tell you about how Lewis was chisled by the Gods, or what Jack Dempsey and his wife had for dinner on October 14th 1927.
