Check out a younger Larry Merchant at the beginning of the fight, 40 years ago Larry was probably still in his 30's at the time. Well apparently you can't use Dick even if it's someone's name. Eklund's wife was surprisingly pretty hot.

Alexis Arguello vs Vilomar Fernandez (July 26, 1978) (10 Rounds Lightweights)

    Round 1: 10-9 Arguello
    Round 2: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 3: 10-9 Arguello
    Round 4: 10-9 Fernandez (close)
    Round 5: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 6: 10-9 Arguello
    Round 7: 10-9 Fernandez
    Round 8: 10-9 Arguello
    Round 9: 10-9 Arguello (close)
    Round 10: 10-9 Arguello

    My Score: 96-94 Arguello

Official Scores: (95-95 Even) (96-95 Fernandez) (96-95 Fernandez)
Winner: By Majority Decision Vilomar Fernandez.

The definition of scoring on a curve (imo) based on Fernandez (the underdog) making it a close fight, in reality Fernandez didn't win anymore than 4 rounds. The 9th was close enough Fernandez could have won, the 4th was close enough Arguello could have won. It's still 6-4 Alexis, Fernandez was like a jackrabbit from the opening bell to the final bell, had to be incredibly frustrating to deal with. The judges would get it right the second time around almost 5 years later.

Hugo Pastor Corro vs Ronnie Harris (August 5, 1978) (15 Rounds for the WBC & WBA Middleweight Titles)

    Round 1: 10-9 Corro
    Round 2: 10-9 Harris
    Round 3: 10-9 Harris
    Round 4: 10-9 Harris
    Round 5: 10-9 Harris
    Round 6: 10-9 Corro
    Round 7: 10-9 Corro
    Round 8: 10-9 Corro
    Round 9: 10-9 Harris
    Round 10: 10-9 Harris
    Round 11: 10-9 Harris
    Round 12: 10-9 Harris
    Round 13: 10-9 Corro
    Round 14: 10-9 Corro
    Round 15: 10-9 Corro

    My Score: 143-142 Harris

Official Scores: (145-143 Corro) (146-144 Harris) (146-145 Corro)
Winner: By Split Decision to retain The Middleweight Championship of the World Hugo Pastor Corro.

I just scored this fight about 2 months ago and saw it a one point win for Corro, this time I have it 1 point for Harris. There is barely anything in these rounds, it's very much what looks better to you on that particular day. Because no one did enough to convincingly win more than a couple rounds either way in this fight.

Marvin Hagler vs Benny Briscoe (August 24, 1978) (10 Rounds Middleweights from the world famous Spectrum in Philly PA)

    Round 1: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 2: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 3: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 4: 10-9 Briscoe
    Round 5: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 6: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 7: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 8: 10-9 Briscoe
    Round 9: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 10: 10-9 Hagler

    My Score: 98-92 Hagler

Official Scores: (49-43 Hagler) (48-43 Hagler) (47-44 Hagler)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

A young Hagler beats a very good, very hard punching fighter in Briscoe. Benny in his younger days actually managed to score a draw against Carlos Monzon in Argentina (which would basically be like a win and very hard to pull off.) Though already ready to be The Champion, whoever the titleholder might be over the next year plus avoided Hagler, when he got his first shot and was robbed with a draw in Antuofermo I. It wouldn't be for another year when a different holder of the championship would give the Marvelous One another shot, with Marvin making the most of it and brutalizing the unlucky placeholder Alan Minter (who was a very good fighter in his own right) and stopped him early in front of a hostile UK crowd in Wembley.

"Sugar" Ray Leonard vs Floyd Mayweather Sr. (September 9, 1978) (10 Rounds Welterweights)

    Round 1: 10-9 Mayweather (close)
    Round 2: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 3: 10-8 Leonard (dominant)
    Round 4: 10-8 Leonard (dominant)
    Round 5: 10-9 Leonard (close)
    Round 6: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 7: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 8: 10-7 Leonard
    Round 9: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 10: TKO

    My Score: 89-78 Leonard

    Official Scores: (N/A)
Winner: By 10th round Technical Knockout "Sugar" Ray Leonard.

School was in session, and Leonard put a terrible beating on Senior here. This fight was in September, Leonard would go on to have 3 more fights before the end of 1978. Randy Shields in his very next fight in October, Bernardo Prada in November, & Armando Muniz in December :eeeeek: Could you imagine a fighter today fighting that type of schedule against that class of opponent back too back too back too back in a 4 month span. All 4 of those men were very good fighters including Mayweather here, and Dick Eklund before him in July who was tricky in his own right, and in his 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th & 17th fights. Sugar Ray was still a year out from his first title shot.

I scored it pretty close to a shutout for Floyd IIRC, it wasn't close at all, Hatton was very busy, but wildly inaccurate and his aggression ineffective, he miss the majority of his shots. Maybe a round or two could go to Hatton, but that's it.

Eddie (Gregory) Mustafa Muhammad vs John Scott (October 12, 1978) (Rahway State Prison, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey) (12 Rounds, Light-Heavyweights)

    Round 1: 10-9 Scott
    Round 2: 10-9 Scott
    Round 3: 10-9 Scott
    Round 4: 10-9 Scott
    Round 5: 10-9 Scott
    Round 6: 10-9 Muhammad
    Round 7: 10-9 Muhammad
    Round 8: 10-9 Scott
    Round 9: 10-9 Scott
    Round 10: 10-9 Scott
    Round 11: 10-9 Scott
    Round 12: 10-9 Scott

    My Score: 118-110

Official Scores: (9-3 Scott) (9-2-1 Scott) (6-4-2 Scott)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision James Scott.

Harold Letterman who was one of the judges for this fight, was quoted as saying "On that day, I thought James Scott was the greatest light heavyweight I ever saw in my life. That's how great he was. On that one day when he beat Gregory, he was the best light heavyweight I ever saw. I never saw a performance like that — anywhere. I don't think Bob Foster was as good as that. I don't think Archie Moore was that good. He was prepared like I never saw in my life."

Well Harold, Scott was prepared for sure, and he beat Muhammad for sure, but if you think that was the best performance by a LHW you've ever seen, and that he was better than Foster or Moore then you really need to have your head examined. It looked to me like Muhammad took the fight lightly, under trained and it cost him. Now he might have lost anyway, but James Scott isn't beating the likes of Victor Galindez, Matthew Saad Muhammad, or the best like Foster & Moore on his best day.

Matthew (Franklin) Saad Muhammad vs Yaqui Lopez I (October 24, 1978) (12 Rounds for the NABF Light-Heavyweight Title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Muhammad
    Round 2: 10-9 Muhammad
Round 3: 10-8 Muhammad (hurts & dominates Lopez)
    Round 4: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 5: 10-9 Muhammad
    Round 6: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 7: 10-9 Muhammad
    Round 8: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 9: Muhammad
    Round 10: 10-9 Muhammad
Round 11: 10-9 Muhammad (Ref waives off the fight just after the bell, but official it's called a TKO this round)

My Score: 107-101 (or 97-92 if you don't score the 11th)

    Official Scores: (N/A)
Winner: By 11th round Technical Knockout to retain the NABF Light-Heavyweight Championship Matthew Saad Muhammad.

Another one of MSM's 5 star rated fights imo, Lopez was game but got cut bad around 1 eye, and the other swollen completely shut. Clear victory for Muhammad, despite being on the verge of heat exhaustion from having to cut 3 pounds the day of to make the 175 lb. limit.
