Who wins? Both had great upsets against the greats of their time (Johansson vs Patterson and Layne vs Walcott, both 5-1 underdogs in the fight). 15 rounds, both are in their prime.

    Some information:
Rex Layne: 6' 1" 193lbs 34-1 (loss avenged) in prime
    Ingemar Johansson 6' 1/2" 194lbs 21-0 in prime

    Whoever lands the right first

Considering layne had very crude defense and Johansson had better ring generalship movement and counter punching ability, my vote goes to Ingo by KO

You would probably have to install Johansen as the favorite, but Layne might well take him out.

Ingo would probably come in at 200 lbs, whereas Layne around 190-195 lbs.
Ingo probably wins in 6-7 rds, though shaken a time or two.

1951-03-09 : Bob Satterfield 180½ lbs lost to Rex Layne 190½ lbs by TKO at 2:56 in round 8 of 10
    • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
    • Referee: Mark Conn
    • Satterfield was a 9-5 favorite.
    • The crowd numbered 5,981 and the receipts were $19,647.
    • Judges' scoring at time of stoppage: Judge Arthur Aidala 3-3-1, Referee Mark Conn 4-3 Satterfield, Judge Harold Barnes 4-3 Layne.
    • Layne was down in the 1st round from a right to the jaw for a count of seven.
    • After this bout the IBC opened negotiations for a return bout between Layne and Jersey Joe Walcott to take place on April 1st in Chicago Stadium. Walcott, however, who had lost to Ezzard Charles for the title two nights previous, signed for a return with Charles, which ultimately became his title winning bout.
James Dawson, New York Times, on the stoppage:

“The hope in Satterfield’s corner was that he could survive the session, but Referee Mark Conn thought otherwise. Springing in between the men as they struggled on the ropes, Conn separated them and halted the fray. The time was 2:56.
“There were many in the gathering who thought that the referee’s action was a hasty one, in view of the short time remaining. It seemed to this observer that Satterfield could have finished the round safely.”

I don't know that much about Johansson actually.

I actually find the fact that Layne won a slug out with Satterfield very impressive.

Look what Satterfield did to some of the other heavyweight contenders of the day!
