He obviously had a big punch. Would he be too small to knock out a 6'5 245lb skilled heavyweight? probably but if he had 6-12 months to bulk up to 200-210 then it would be a different story

The bottom line is people incessantly trying to hype Cockell into something he clearly wasn't .

Who are these bigger people with better ko records? Valdes was the number 1 contender at the end of both53 and 54 and number 6 in 55 why would he not be worth mentioning?

Joe frazier did hit harder and had much better chin than marciano

And Archie Moore was always better than him. That’s how it was regarded then and how it is regarded now.

Insisting on Valdes being so outstanding a contender to Marciano is like saying Henry Cooper was a bigger threat to Floyd Patterson than Sonny Liston was.

    It’s balder dash.

    And no doubt he could.

He looks pretty shredded at 190.
But suggesting such doesn't bode too well around these parts.

Isn't Bellew ranked like 4th by Boxrec?

I don't think that's what people are saying.

An undeniable fact is that the power in a punch comes in large part from the amount of bodyweight you put behind it.

Guys like Tyson and Marciano put all of their weight behind their punches.
And that Marciano just doesn't have enough weight period for a KO against elite big HWs if he is only 185lbs.
Weight itself is also a factor in absorbing a punch, it's physics. Bigger neck muscles protecting the head from accelerating. More bodyweight bracing you when you cover up.

Your ability to KO people probably depends on how much of your weight you can put behind your punches(punching force) and how fast and accurately you can throw a punch that has maximum weight behind it(punching ability)

So as guys get bigger, Marciano (who puts all of his weight behind his shots ) simply doesn't have enough bodyweight in total to KO the really elite SHWs. So if he gains muscle and weighs more his power should increase to the point where he is now dangerous against superheavies.
Since we already know that he can put all of his weight behind his shots, having more functional weight(muscle) means more weight behind the punch.

So I think if you can already punch(put your bodyweight behind a punch and land it accurately) you can KO guys at any weight provided you raise your own weight in an athletic way

He hit maybe marginally harder but Marciano hit with both hands.
Better Chin? Based on Frazier showing a good chin vs which Punchers?
Both are proven to be resilient vs average or good Punchers.
Both have been dropped/hurt but continued against guys

No clear edge there in terms of chin

He was the #2 contender, and justifiably so in my opinion.

He was perhaps one of the more interesting #2 contenders that have come and gone over the years.

We don't need to build him up into anything more than that!

As damning evidence of the paucity of heavyweight talent in that era as possible.

    Not necessarily.

Weak contenders occasionally get to the top in strong eras, either by playing their hand better, or simply due to luck.

That is just that nature of the game.

Personally I feel that if a fighter like Cockell, navigates the icebergs within the rules, then he should get the same chances as anybody else gaining the same ranking.

Lol Moore only holds the record for most KOs and to be fair the knock down looked more like an off balance knock down then anything he was up at 2.
