You must be dyslexic or something because i never said rocky didnt win the fight by knockout. I said rocky got his ass kicked and then made a comeback which is a fact, period.

    Not really.
It was competitive at times, but Rocky was never getting his ass kicked.

Saying so sounds like you read a Ring Magazine description of the fight, rather than watching it with through a modern lens.

No, the FACT is that you cannot get your ass kicked and win the fight at the same time. No asskicking. Didn't happen. You imagined it.

You guys do know boxing is scored round by round right? We're not talking about his overall performance or the very last round when he came back to win.

When marciano was dropped by walcott, face bruised, blood splurting, getting popped in the lip, swinging at air and getting countered, having his head snapped by vicious right hands and picked apart, during THOSE moments of the fight was Marciano WINNING? Yes or no, pick one.

His own crowd said he was, perhaps they never made it to the fight?
NickySylvester with Allie Colombo Rocky's closest friend .A reporter asked Sylvester at ringside ," what is happening to your pal?"
He replied," what do you think is happening he is getting his brains knocked out".
"What's going to happen if he loses?"
"I'll tell you what's going to happen,50 thousand Italians are going to commit suicide"

"I''ll never forget it Rocky was taking a helluva pounding. He didn't look like he could win. There were guys from Brockton who had bet everything ,gone
in hock way over their heads to make a fast buck on this fight. They looked sick, like they was gonna puke all over the place any minute."
" Izzy Gold, Rocky's boyhood friend from ringside.

In the 8th round 12 years old Peter Marciano tried to run out of the arena ,only to he held back by a priest.
" How am I doing ? " Rocky in the corner after the 12 round
"You're losing you've got to knock him out"Allie Colombo

Because when it comes to Marciano they are divorced from reality!

    Finally he said it!!

This is what this bias against Don Cokkell is all about. He was British. Roy Harris is fine but Cokkell isn’t.

You know the 1950s wasn’t a weak era because you have championed contenders like Henry, Valdes, Satterfeild and Baker as highly as the real cream of the era like Marciano, Charles, Moore, Walcott and Harold Johnson.

Henry, Satterfeild, Baker and Valdes fit right in with Layne, Mathews, Lastarza and Cokkell But for some reason you separate them. I don’t know why.

I don't think he earned the ranking.

He wasn't a cruiserweight either. However, his fight night weight was closest to a LHW on fight night, so that's logically where I'd put him if forced to choose.

A very, very small cruiserweight, like someone who'd be giving up over twenty pounds in the ring, taking into account weight cutting and average fight night weights. Rocky was a great fighter, but I'm not sure he'd like to be giving away that much weight to his opponents on that consistent a basis.

He might not have to. For anyone to be fighting Rocky they needed to alive in the 1950s. Regardless of height, there was only so heavy a fighter could get and still be successful in those days. Training and diet was different.

If Roy Harris earned his ranking of #3 then Don Cokkell earned his rating of #2.

Both were questionable but the difference is that Rocky fought the best fighters as well as the alphabet crap top rated while Patterson under D'Amato fought absolute clowns regardless of the b.s. rankings at the time .. seriously, Jackson, Rademacher, Harris and London .. for three (3) years those were the challengers for the heavyweight title .. no wonder he got flattened by Ingo. It was the first non-corpse he fought since Moore. Not only would Moore, Walcott or Charles have wrecked that crew but the best LaStarza would have too ..

Cokkell was British hype because he somehow made it to number 2 without beating the best contenders in Europe (Neuhaus Sys Gardner ) and beating the beat contenders to America (Charles Jackson Valdes Baker Moore )

Layne fits in their with them in his prime but the rest (Cokkell Lastarza Matthews) don’t belong on that same tier at all...they don’t have good enough resumes and showed severe limitations on film that would cause then to lose to the above. Cokkell Matthews and Lastarza does not hold any victories over the group mentioned above. Not 1.

Archie Moore referred to kid Matthews as a “west coast hype job”

Jim Amato White had to tell rocky Jones to cool it in between rounds so he wouldn’t beat Lastarza again

Jimmy Slade who couldn’t break an egg bounced Cokkell up and down like a yo yo

Of the above fighters here’s how they rate

    1. Rocky Marciano
    2. Ezzard Charles
    3. Jersey Joe Walcott
    4. Harold Johnson
    5. Rex Layne
    6. Clarence Henry
    7. Bob Satterfield
    8. Bob Baker
    9. Nino Valdes

    Lastarza
    Matthews
    Cokkell

Well Jackson beat Baker to get that #1 ranking. Harris beat pastrano to get that #3 ranking and was unbeaten. They were entirely legit. London was a tune up for Ingo. He had been as high as number two by the IBA.

National Boxing Association ratings – via Google News

    (as of November 5, 1958)

    Champion: Floyd Patterson

    1. Ingemar Johansson
    2. Brian London
    3. Nino Valdez
    4. Zora Folley
    5. Willie Pastrano
    6. Eddie Machen
    7. Henry Cooper
    8. Roy Harris
    9. Mike DeJohn
    10. Sonny Liston

The only challengers who Floyd missed out were Machen, Folley and Henry Cooper. Floyd was prepared to fight the winner of a Folley And Machen world title eliminator. The fight ended in a lousy draw. Nobody cared to see a rematch between Machen and Folley. The pair of them blew their title eliminator so the #3 (Harris who was unbeaten) became more desirable. Then Ingo sensationaly destroys Machen which eclipsed everyone else.

Cooper beat London but was cut in the process and could not fight at the scheduled date so London went in his place.

Once an ex champion Floyd rounded up Machen and Cooper and beat both of them.
