    He's a big fan of Mikey Garcia, and his favorite boxing movie is "The Set-Up" (1949), which is also my favorite boxing movie.

    This made me wish we had someone like Larry still calling boxing fights today. He really knows the sport inside and out. Steve Kim and Mario Lopez ask him all the right questions, including about Deontay Wilder. The show is a must-listen.

    i had no idea larry and i thought and saw boxing almost exactly alike. other than him not seeing the pac-lucas result beforehand, we are in sync.

    Uhhhh, this seems like some revisionist history, haha. Larry Merchant is/was dreadful. Somebody's got to say it I know that was the consensus on the board before he finally got the boot off the mic.

    Every single ex boxer who was done commentary for HBO with him has called him out for being an armchair quarterback, who is clueless and eventually falls asleep if it's not a complete slugfest.

    But tbh Larry isn't THAAT bad compared to Lampley.
    Larry is less biased in his scoring than Ledermann, and even though he's opinionated he calls it the way he sees it and seems to have integrity and consistency while Lampley is the worst and most biased cheerleader I have ever seen.
    The guy basically creams himself for the house fighter.


    All of them are stale old farts that need to be aired out.

    merchant would actually make calls against the house fighter

    my only gripe really was his delivery started to slow down considerably

    i liked his stuff in the older days on hbo during the 80's when he would do the prefight build up talk and presenting
