He simply forgot to take his morning orange juice in the Douglas fight.

Never repeated the mistake after that.

He didn't have the mental toughness to maintain that razor sharp focus for ten to twenty years. Some guys have enough discipline to get a title but not enough to keep it.

He just lost focus and desire and with his style it saw a dramatic fall in his effectiveness. Fact is there's a reason why nobody has really tried to adopt his style since, it's incredibly physically demanding.

He spent much of the fight in a crouch which made him hard to hit and had him like a coiled spring ready to explode. But unless you are in incredible physical shape you can't fight that way for more than a few rounds as it's so physically taxing. So when he even lost a few percent in terms of physical fitness we saw a much larger decrease in his effectiveness and later in his career it's why he basically became a 3 round fighter.

Cus was also probably the only one who could keep him under control. His death didn't see the fall of Tyson immediately as I think his passing motivated him to achieve what Cus envisioned for him and become champion. But without his continual presence and guidance he lost his way. Signing with King, marrying Givens, partying too much etc.

Cus was dead, his wife screwed him over, he was starting to suspect that King was just out for money and had pulled him away from anyone left who had legitimately cared about him at all. He was depressed, lonely, and didn't care.

He was not finished, he was slightly past prime from 1989-1991 because he was developing into a slugger and
his boxing skills were deteriorating, post-prison Mike Tyson was a pure slugger, a 6 rounds fighter.

He was clearly groomed and developed like a project by his master. Without his master he went wild and could no longer maintain the same standards. You might even say he 'checked his privilege' and his boxing suffered for it.

Cus D'Amato died before Tyson even became champion and Tyson held that belt for 4 years (86-90). So his passing away did not have a major impact on Tyson's career.

Tyson simply didn't train effectively enough, it was the loss of Rooney that had the most impact on his skills even though he managed to hold the belt for 2 years after Rooney's firing.

Firing Rooney and having useless idiots like Steve 'Crocodile' Fitch in his corner hurt him the most.

if he'd had time to become a man, and had challenged for the titles later in life, he might have lasted longer. People can burn out, especially with too much success early on when they dont have the head to balance it. Those who pushed him too early are partially to blame.

If he'd had time to develop some personal appraisal, he might have avoided the rather obvious pitfalls of Robin Givens and the other Desiree woman, and more pertinently, his own libido. Women can kill a half developed guy.

To be fair, there haven't been many 5ft9 heavyweights since Tyson either....

His fear factor was gone after Douglas. Was never coming back - unless the opponent was called McNeeley, Seldon or Bruno.
